Campbellsville one win from MSC baseball championship

Box Score 1 With two games left in the regular season, Campbellsville University is one win away from its sixth straight Mid-South Conference championship, thanks to a 10th-inning double by sophomore Craig Edwards.

Tied, 4-4, Edwards ripped a double into right field to score Richie Rowland to give CU a 5-4 lead and eventual win in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at Georgetown College. CU won the first game, 10-0, in six innings.

The win, along with a University of Rio Grande loss, gives Campbellsville a 1.5 game lead over Rio in the regular season Mid-South Conference standings. Another win for Campbellsville, or a loss for Rio, will secure the regular season title for CU.

Edwards started CU's offense for the nightcap with a leadoff single in the third inning. He and Zac Townsend, who reached on an error, scored on a one-out, two-RBI single by Michael Caleb to put the maroon up 2-0. Edwards' sac fly in the fourth gave Campbellsville a 3-0 lead, as Luke Gadow scored. The sac fly proved to be insurance, as Georgetown posted a three-spot to tie the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the fourth.

Georgetown's runs came on an RBI single by TC O'Neal and a two-out, two-RBI double from Tanner Baldwin.

Campbellsville took advantage of an error in the fifth to regain the lead, 4-3, as Alex Ponich scored on the wild throw. The Tigers maintained the lead until the sixth, when Chris Wood tripled to score Mike Steinke. Alex Tolmazchoff, who gave up the tying run, got a ground ball third out to end the inning and strand Wood.

Over the next three innings, Campbellsville collected two hits and held Georgetown hitless. Rowland led off the 10th inning by reaching base on a wild throw by Baldwin at second base. After Edwards doubled in Rowland, Townsend grounded out to end the inning. Rusty Devitt struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the 10th before giving up a triple to O'Neal, but a pop fly to center ended the game.

In the first game, Campbellsville scored eight runs in the third inning. Rowland led CU with a 3-for-3 appearance at the plate and three RBIs. Edwards, Gadow and Brian Chase each had two RBIs, while Ponich had one. CU had five doubles in the game.

Winning pitchers for the day were Ian Pick (10-0), who went the distance in game one, and Rusty Devitt, who allowed one hit over four innings in game two. Pick struck out four and allowed three hits, while Devitt had five K's in relief. Jared Lunardi started the second game ands truck out seven over five innings. He allowed three earned runs off four hits.

K.C. Massey and Kevin Rueff were the losing pitchers for Georgetown.

Campbellsville (34-17, 21-4 MSC) will meet Georgetown (23-27, 18-8 MSC) again Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
