Hits seemed to come easy for Campbellsville University as the Mid-South Conference Tournament got underway Thursday at Millinnium Park in Danville, Ky. The Lady Tigers collected 13 hits in a six-inning, first-round win over St. Catharine College, 9-1.
Alex Jane Clemmons led the offensive enslaught with two home runs and three RBIs, while
Jordan Cornett and
Emma Napier had three hits each, including a double from Napier.
Clemmons' first home run, a two-run shot in the third inning, helped give Campbellsville a 3-0 lead. After St. Catharine scored its lone run to cut the score to, 3-1, the Lady Tigers posted a four-run fifth inning. A lead-off solo shot from Clemmons was part of the inning. With two out,
Katie Daniel walked and then a single by
Kacie Vincent preceded a run-scoring double by Napier.
The Lady Tigers ended the game early after Clemmons was knocked in on a single by
Allison Horton, who later scored on a sacrifice fly from Napier to enact the eight-run mercy rule.
Horton recorded the win in the circle to improve to 22-12 on the year. She allowed just one run off five hits.
Cassidy Kroeker closed out the game in the sixth witha three up, three down piece of work.
Campbellsville (35-18) will face either Georgetown or Pikeville in the second round of the MSC Tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. Second-seed Georgetown meets seven-seed Pikeville in their first round game Friday at 9 a.m. Should Campbellsville win the 1 p.m. game, it would play again at 5 p.m., but a lose will schedule the next game for 3 p.m.
