It was the most points ever scored between two teams in a Campbellsville University versus Union College football game, but hold short on thinking the combined 83-point shootout in Campbellsville's 47-36 win Saturday was solely offensive.

  Our guys really wanted to come here, get the victory and go 2-0," CU head coach Perry Thomas said. "We're not going to always be the best looking team in the world. That's not our style. We're going to play hard and execute, and we're going to play ugly at times, but the bottom line is you've got to find a way to get the victory."

That's what the Tigers did, starting with the coin toss.

The Tigers opened the game with a 10-play, 74-yard drive after winning the toss and electing to receive the football. Gerwan Brewer of Louisville, Ky., found an outside edge on an 8-yard touchdown reception to cap the drive with his first collegiate touchdown and the Tigers' first points of the game. David Hon, who was a perfect 6-of-6 on point after kicks, hit his first PAT to give CU a 7-0 lead only five minutes into the game.

Union scored late in the first quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run by Rob Brown, but failed to tie it up on a busted point-after try, as the Tigers held a narrow, 7-6, lead after 15 minutes of play. The scoring drive began with a muffed punt by CU senior punt Calvin Bini at the Union 44 - the first of two muffed punts that led to Bulldog points.

The second quarter was give-and-take between the two teams. Radcliff, Ky., native Mark Terry picked up his first of three rushing touchdowns for the Tigers on a 4-yard run with 14:02 left on the clock in the second quarter. Union answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by Terence Pollock that made him Union's all-time leading rusher. A 57-yard pass from Mike Brinkley to Brown helped set up the score. After 7 1/2 minutes of play in the second quarter, Campbellsville led, 14-12. Last year, it took me 11 games to get one big turnover for the team. I just saw the ball on the ground and had to go fight for it," Demary said. "Last year, they killed me with those corner routes, so I had to do a lot of film study and be prepared for it. Watching a lot of film helped me out this year."

Union pulled within a touchdown before the half, 26-19, on a 34-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Hicks.

Coming out of the half, the Bulldogs stalled on their first drive, but found new life on a second mishandled punt by Bini. The turnover led to a third-and-10, 12-yard touchdown pass from Brinkley to Sean Mackey to tie the game for the first time, 26-26. It was one of only four successful third down attempts for the Bulldogs in the game, as CU held them to 4-of-12 on third down.

The Tigers didn't waste any time answering. On first-and-15, Will Warf found Stan Warrenhuffman on a 42-yard pass to move Campbellsville inside the Union 30. Warf struck again two plays later with a pass to Harold Small, who raced down the end zone and dove inside the pylon for the go-ahead touchdown, 33-26.

After the Tigers regained the lead for good, the defense got back to work with interceptions from Demary and Brandon Brown on back-to-back Union possessions.

" We had to buckle down. We came together as a secondary and came together as a defense and talked about it and fix those blown coverages to make sure everybody was on the same page," Demary said. "Once everybody in the secondary and the whole defense was on the right page we started clicking, and once we started clicking, you see what happened. You see how many turnovers we got."

Though neither interception resulted in points for the Tigers, Thomas saw Brown's pick in the end zone as a momentum changer.

" They had a little momentum going. That was a big, key turnover that kind of gave us our momentum back. It got us back in our rhthym," Thomas said.

Terry went on to have touchdown runs of 5 and 29 yards in the fourth quarter, both of which were set up by Union turnovers. Calvin Hicks recovered a fumbled punt by Mackey early in the quarter and defensive lineman Donnie Bigbee set up the final Tiger score with a 14-yard interception return to the Bulldog 29-yard line.

"Coach told us to go out there and kill the ballgame." Terry said of the final touchdown drive. "I told him to give me the ball. They gave me the ball, and I saw a hole open. They missed a few tackles, and I saw the goal line the whole time."

Union managed to add a field goal and late touchdown to pull within 11 points of CU.

Campbellsville (2-0) travels to Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn., next Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

On scoring a combined 83 points " We certainly didn't think we'd give up the points we gave up, but we didn't think we'd have the tournovers either that gave them the ball with good field position. Their last touchdown, it was a play I should have called a timeout on. We had a player to have a helmet break on the field and he was running off the field. I almost called a time out, because the defense wasn't even aligned properly. It was just a coaching mistake right there."

On Mark Terry
"Mark played today the way we need him to play. He's a big strong back that can come in and break some tackles. You're not going to get him down on the first hit and he's going to fall forward every time. Every once in a while he's going to break one free. I thought he had a good day. He ran behind his blocks well. I thought the quarterbacks played better today, because they got us in some checks that allowed us to get him the ball. I thought our offensive line dominated.

"Defensively at times we were pretty good, but we weren't consistant."

On Union
"I thought their defense got worn down. Their offense was pretty sharp, but I thought their defense got worn down."
