RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Campbellsville rediscovered its sense of urgency Friday night at Rio Grande, defeating the Red Storm 3-1 - 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-21.
The Lady Tigers remain in a tie in the loss column with West-Division-leading Lindsey Wilson College, a team they travel to on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers (17-11, 7-1) used a set-ending kill by
Samantha James to secure a 25-22 win in the first. CU led 19-13 on another James kill, but Rio (14-13, 3-5) crawled to within two on two occasions, 23-21 and 24-22, before being put away.
In set two, Rio took its first lead in the match at 4-5 and extended its lead to 14-17 when CU committed a service error. The Lady Tigers knotted the score at 20, but lost two straight and could never draw even from there as Rio manufactured a point with a tip for a 22-24 lead and then CU committed a receiving error on set point.
Caitlin Dresing served for seven consecutive points in set three that gave Campbellsville an 18-11 edge. Rio made a set of it, though, by taking four straight itself. But James collected a couple of kills along with
Laura DeGear and a set-winner by
Shannon Cahill.
In set four, Campbellsville gradually pulled away, using two kills by
Genevieve Collette for a 15-11 margin. Rio called timeout trailing 17-13 and out of the TO the Lady Tigers won three straight points that the Red Storm could never overcome.
Genevieve Collette had 22 kills in the match followed by Cahill with 11. But the Lady Tigers got ample support from
Giselle Hernandez, DeGear,
Monica Chernichan and James with nine, eight, seven and seven, respectively.
Lilian DaSilva (41) and
Jackie Schwieger (17) shared 58 assists. Dresing had 21 digs, followed by Cahill with 17 and
Audrey Sanders with 10.
The Lady Tigers will stay in Ohio and play Shawnee State Saturday morning at 11:00 before returning home. Prior to its Thursday match-up at Lindsey, CU goes on the road again at the University of the Cumberlands.
