JACKSON, Tenn. - Campbellsville went on a three-minute drought to start the second half and never fully recovered in dropping a 69-56 decision Monday night to No.-2 ranked Union University.
"I'm disappointed," said Coach Ginger. "They have a really nice team. We played super the first half and in the second half we got away from it."
The Lady Tigers committed 22 turnovers and could manage but 22 points after intermission. Twice during the second half, CU committed three consecutive turnovers allowing Union to construct a 62-52 lead.
Campbellsville (3-1) tied the score at 44-all when
Mackenzie Lee hit a layup for her second straight bucket, but that's the last time the Lady Tigers could draw even.
Lavada Ross, who Colvin called one of the top five players in the nation, had 20 first-half points for Union (4-0) and ended the game with 27. She also had nine rebounds, six offensive.
The Lady Tigers got a solid game out of
Chelsea Craig, the junior from Frankfort, Ky., who scored 14 points while playing the last 11 minutes with four fouls.
But Colvin lamented her team's lack of rebounding. Union pounded out a 41-28 advantage on the boards.
"Until we become a good rebounding team, we're going to struggle," said Colvin. "The good thing is, we've got until Saturday to work on it."
CU, which shot 55 percent in the first half, ended up at 44 percent. Union shot 40 percent in the first half and 48 for the game.
In the first half, Campbellsville led 21-13 at the 10:43 mark only to see that lead evaporate to 23-22 as Mildred Olumasi went to work. But the Lady Tigers led the rest of the way and held a 34-31 half-time advantage.
Craig scored nine first-half points and
Mary Jehlik canned two 3s that separated CU to 19-13 after Union had tied the score at 13.
"We played super the first half," said Colvin. We spread the floor and took good shots. But we looked really, really bad at times in the second half. We weren't ready for their intensity to start the second half."
The Lady Tigers are home Saturday when they play Rio Grande in their first Mid-South Conference game. Tipoff will be at 6:00 and the game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
