OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Campbellsville couldn't stand prosperity, losing a five-set match to Trevecca Nazarene and ending the Lady Tigers' season in the semi-finals of the NCCAA Mid-East Region, 25-23, 25-27, 26-28, 25-14 and 19-21.
Trevecca lost to Asbury University 3-1 in the finals. Asbury made the final after a 3-1 victory over Oakland City.
After winning the first set 25-23, CU (23-15) gave up eight-point leads in both the second and third sets, digging a hole from which they would not recover.
Campbellsville led 16-8 in set two only to see Trevacca win 25-27. The Lady Tigers built a similar lead (18-10) in the third only to see it evaporate into a 26-28 loss.
The Lady Tigers took control of set four at 9-6 and never led by less than two the rest of the way en route to a25-19 win.
In the fifth set, CU had set points at 14-13 and 19-18, only to see the Lady Trojans rally. Sam James had three big kills in the fifth set that helped bring CU to a 17-all tie. But with the score tied at 19, an attack error led to a 19-20 deficit and Trevecca blocked the next point for the win.
Genevieve Collette and Samantha James led the team in kills with 18 and 17, respectively. Monica Chernichan had 16 and Shannon Cahill 15.
Jackie Schwieger had 40 assists and Lilian DaSilva 25. Audrey Sanders had 24 digs, follow by Caitlin Dresing (15), DaSilva 10, Cahill and Collette 9, Schwieger 8, James 7 and Chernichan 6.
The loss brings to an end the volleyball careers of seniors Shannon Cahill, Genevieve Collette, Monica Chernichan, Samantha James and Lilian DaSilva.
