CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Lady Tiger Coach
Ginger Colvin ran out of gas this morning on her way to a walk-thru, but fortunately her team had plenty in their tank. Campbellsville broke open a close game with two straight
Courtney Clifton 3s late in the first half and went on to beat Rio Grande, 83-51.
The Lady Tigers (4-1, 1-0) have not lost a home conference game since February of 2008, and that string is still in tact. As a matter of fact, CU is 38-2 in regular-season Mid-South play over three seasons.
"We got a win and that's a good thing," said Colvin. "It's rough playing a conference game this early and not have all your sets in."
Colvin, who was disappointed in her team's effort on the boards at Union, watched her team out rebound Rio 27-17 in the first half and went to win that stat 52-33.
"We really worked on that (rebounding) this week, and I'm glad to see us improve."
Things got worse for Rio after the intermission as Clifton punctuated a 9-0 run with her third 3 six minutes in. The Lady Tiger built a 30-point cushion and closed out the game by clearing their bench.
CU held Rio's leading scorer, Kaylee Helton, to just five points. The Lady Tigers had a 48-26 advantage in points in the paint and held a 13-0 margin in second-chance points. Of their 52 rebounds, 17 were offensive.
Campbellsville shot 54 percent in the second half and 49 percent for the game. Rio was held to 33 percent shooting and only 41 percent of their free throws.
The Lady Tigers forced 28 Rio turnovers, but had 25 themselves.
By contrast, CU had 23 assists, led by
Mackenzie Lee's seven.
"We'll pass the ball," deadpanned Colvin, "but sometimes it's to the wrong team. We'll have to work on that too."
The Lady Tigers are home Monday when they play West Virginia Tech. Tipoff will be at 6:00 and the game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
