Lady Tigers use defense to blow Pikeville away, 85-50

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - The last time the Lady Tigers played Pikeville the Lady Bears gave them everything they wanted in an 85-76 CU win. Thursday night the Lady Tigers gave Pikeville everything they wanted. Result: Another win, 85-50.

Campbellsville (20-3, 13-1) held Pikeville to 15 first-half points in building a 41-15 advantage at the intermission and were never threatened.



"They are a really good offensive team," said coach Ginger Colvin. "To hold them to 15 first-half points is an achievement.

"That was the difference, our defense," continued Colvin. "Miranda (assistant Miranda Denney) does a great job scouting. We knew every one of their sets going in to the game."

Whitney Ballinger went for 31 points and nine rebounds, moving her into fourth all time in career points, giving her 1,820 and moving her past Julie Jeffries.

"Whitney has just been playing great, but we're a better team than we were in the first Pikeville game," said Colvin. "We're playing more kids and getting good minutes. from everyone."

The Lady Tigers used a 19-1 run in the first half to build their working margin and then Pikeville went on a five-minute drought in the second half as the Lady Tigers built a 27-point second-half lead.

All but one Lady Tiger scored in the game. Ballinger was joined in double figures by Courtney Clifton's 14. Melly Heaton  hit two 3s and scored eight points. moving her to within nine of 1,000 points.

CU hit 60 percent of  its second-half field goals and shot 53 percent for the game, 40 percent from behind the arc.

Campbellsville out-rebounded Pikeville 39-35 and forced the Lady Bears into five more turnovers.

The Lady Tigers move on Saturday to Virginia-Wise in a 2 p.m. tipoff.

"We're going to a tough place and they've been playing great of late," said Colvin. "All the coaches we've talked to say it a tough, different place to play. We expect a good game."
