CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY. -- When it comes to the game of basketball,
Ginger High Colvin has always known how to find good talent. The
Tompkinsville, Ky., native who rewrote the NAIA record book for assists
in 1990 with 865 career assists, is now the quickest coach in
Campbellsville University history to win 100 games. She did so in her 126th game as a coach Tuesday night in the Powell Athletic Center with a 93-48 victory over Oakland City University.
Hall of Fame coach Donna Wise, who won more than 600 games at CU, reached the milestone in her 136th game. The only other coach of any CU sport to reach the mark quicker was former Lady Tiger volleyball coach
Randy LeBleu, who won No. 100 in game No. 127. But while the milestone is a nice bench mark for the two-time Mid-South
Conference Coach of the Year, the century mark is a testament to her
senior class, who are also 100-26, the third-most wins currently by a
CU senior class.
"The beauty of this is it's not my 100th win, it's ours together. This
senior group was my first recruiting class, which I think is something
to share with those kids. We've gone through these four years
together," Colvin said. "It's really nice to have, but we have bigger
things in mind for sure."
The 100-win mark is only one of many milestones for these Lady Tigers.
Reigning NAIA National Player of the Year
Whitney Ballinger posted a double-double 25 points and 18 rebounds Tuesday to pass the 1,000 career rebound mark in her 94th game. Earlier in the season, Ballinger passed the 300-block and 200-assist milestones before blowing past the 1,500-point notch. She is currently fourth on the Lady Tigers' all-time scoring list with 1,872 points.
Last Saturday,
Melly Heaton joined the party by scoring her 1,000th point in a 100-67 CU win at the University of Virginia-Wise. Heaton, Ballinger and 2010 NAIA All-America honorable mention selection
Courtney Danis (1,736) now combine for 4,619 career points as of Feb. 15. With at least six games remaining in the season, the trio is only 308 points shy of one of the highest scoring trios in recent NAIA history - Union University's 2008-09 senior class of Josephine Owino, Meredith Jacobs and Jessica Graves.
"This is in three years for Whitney. If we can play around 10 more games she's got a chance to get 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, which is awesome.
Courtney Danis started out her freshman year with more than 500 points and has seen her averages go down because we brought in more offense, and she's handled that extremely well. What she's done for our program has been phenomenal.
Melly Heaton has hit more game-winners for us, or for me, than any other player. When you put those three together, it's a pretty good 1-2-3 punch to have on the floor," Covlin said.
Overall, this group of six seniors, which also includes
Alexia Williams,
T.J. Thomas and
Millie Deason, have combined for 5,503 points.
During Tuesday's win, Campbellsville started the game with a 10-3 lead and extended the margin to 25 points, 49-24, by halftime. Ballinger and sophomore transfer
Courtney Clifton combined for 29 of CU's first half points with 16 and 13, respectively. Clifton added two free throws early in the second half to finish with 15 points.
Heaton added to her career total by scoring 11 points in the second half. Williams, fourth in career points among the 2010-11 seniors, finished the game with 10 points. She followed Ballinger's rebound lead with seven boards, including leading all players with four offensively.
"Whitney got on the boards hard tonight and that's good for her, because she has not had big rebound games as of late," Colvin said. "Alexia really got after it also. She''s a really good offensive rebounder and has a knack for getting to the ball."
Campbellsville (22-3, 14-1 MSC) will host St. Catharine College for a Mid-South Conference game Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. With a win, CU can wrap up its third-straight Mid-South Conference championship and 11th in program history. The game will be televised across the Commonwealth on the Wazoo Sports Network.
Jay Turner and Robert Bauer will provide the call on radio across Central Kentucky on K-Country 105.7 FM and online at KCountry1057.com.
