Richardson no-hitter sets tone for doubleheader sweep of KSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Strong pitching, including a game one no-hitter by Ryan Richardson, lifted Campbellsville University to a doubleheader sweep Wednesday against Kentucky State University, 10-0 and 11-1, at Tiger Field.

Richardson, a junior from Spokane, Wash., struck out six of the 17 batters he faced and walked one through five innings of work to start the day. The Tigers allowed a total of two base runners in the game, as Jordan Cox drew the walk in the fifth after Raphael Amey reached on an error in the fourth.

"Ryan did a good job. We'd hoped he'd be able to be a mid-week starter and he came through for us. We got it done in five, and his pitching had a lot to do with it," CU head coach Beauford Sanders said.

It's the fourth no-hitter by a Tiger pitcher since 2006. Jared Lunardi was the last Tiger to throw a no-no, doing so March 26, 2010 in a five-inning, 10-0 win over Lindsey Wilson College. Prior to that, Jason Neufeld and Morgan Carlile threw no-hitters in the spring of 2006 and 2007, respectively.

Offensively, the Tigers' bats came alive with 11 hits in the first game. The Tigers took a 5-0 lead after two innings and scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early on the 10-run rule.

In the second game, Anthony Wirkkala (1-0) recorded his first win as a Tiger, holding Kentucky State to three hits and one run through four innings of work. The game was once again shortened when CU scored a four-run fourth inning and added two in the fifth after loading the bases. The Tigers had a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Offensively, Gabriel Arcoleo led the Tigers with a 4-for-4 performance in the second game. He drove in three runs and scored three times in addition to recording eight putouts at first base. Gibby Briones also had four hits, combining for a 4-for-5 day at the plate in the two games. He had a double, RBI and scored three times. Michael Durham was 2-for-3 on the day.

Sanders was pleased with the performance to bounce back from a 16-2 loss the night before at No. 1 Cumberland University.

"We knew K-State didn't match up to us talent-wise, but we didn't play down to their level. We did what we needed to do, played our game, were in the game and hustled. I was real pleased with how we took care of our business knowing we had the upper hand. They showed a lot of maturity," he said.

Campbellsville (14-10, 8-2 MSC) travels to the University of the Cumberlands for a four-game MSC series this weekend. The Tigers will challenge the Patriots with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday and another Saturday at noon EDT. The Tigers hold a one-game lead over Cumberland sin the MSC West standings.
