Tigers sweep Cumberlands, take three-game MSC lead

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Big innings were the key for the Tigers Saturday, as Campbellsville University swept a Mid-South Conference doubleheader at the University of the Cumberlands, 15-2 and 10-2.

In game one, the Tigers scored four runs in each the second and third innings and pushed across seven in the fifth inning. CU broke open the second game with a six-run fifth inning.

Campbellsville allowed two Patriot runs in the first inning of game one but Michael Durham sparked the Tigers' offense with a one-out single to left in the second inning. True freshman Aaron Schwoebel slapped out his first collegiate triple to drive in Durham, the first of 25 Tiger runs on the day. Schwoebel also tripled in two runs in the fifth and led CU with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored in the game.

Craig Edwards, Michael Caleb and Durham each had two hits to follow Schwoebel's lead and combined for six RBIs. Edwards drove in two in the second and one in the fifth.

In the second game, Danny Lapchak hit a three-run home run as part of the Tigers' six-run fifth inning. He finished the day with a team-high four hits, along with Caleb, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in each game. Trent Seamons also had three RBIs in the second game, and finished the day with a 3-for-3 performance in the two games with four RBIs and three runs scored. He was courtesy runner for Anthony Rossetto in the first game, who did not have an official at bat but reached three times.

For Cumberlands, Charles Hyde led with two hits and an RBI in the second game and Josh Wood was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Fox had two hits. Blake Debacher and Justin Jackson drove in the runs in game one.

Michael McBride (4-1) and Jacob Cook (2-1) recorded the wins, respectively, for CU. Both allowed two runs off six hits and a walk. McBride struck out three through five innings, while Cook struck out two in six and 2/3 innings. Andrew Shoemaker closed the second game with a ground out after Cook gave up Cumberlands' second run in the seventh.

Campbellsville (17-11, 11-3 MSC) strengthened its MSC West Division lead to three games. The Tigers will travel to Union College for a non-conference game Tuesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
