No. 17 CU drops two against Mo. Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Seventeenth-ranked Campbellsville University dropped a doubleheader Tuesday, 2-1 and 10-2, to Missouri Baptist University at Tiger Baseball Field.

The Tigers posted two doubles in the first inning of Game 1, but left Rylan Chin and Craig Edwards stranded in scoring position. They were the first of 11 runners left on base for the Tigers in the two games, but the CU defense stranded 19 MBU runners.

CU used the doubleheader as a day to get its pitching staff some innings. After two scoreless, hitless innings for Michael McBride in Game 1, Andrew Shoemaker allowed a run on two hits in the top of the third, as MBU scored on an RBI single by Adalberto Vargas. The Tigers responded though to tie the game in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI double by Edwards, who went 3-for-3 on the day.

Gibby Briones took over on the mound in the fourth inning for CU, allowing one run off two hits. Courtesy runner Tyler Anglin scored on a two-out RBI single by Mackenzie Terrill after advancing to second base on a wild pitch. The Tigers stranded runners on second in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to close the game.

In Game 2, Colton Brown got hit for two earned runs in the second inning, but it was a four-run fifth and a three-run sixth that caused the most damage. After falling behind 2-0, Campbellsville evened the score in the third on a two-run double by Gabriel Arcoleo that scored Chin and Edwards.

Michael Caleb, who posted the longest outing of the day for CU, went three innings and allowed just three hits from the mound, but MBU posted a four-spot on the shortstop/pitcher in the fifth. Three of the runs were unearned. After Brad Blankenship drove in the final two runs of the inning on a double, Anthony Wirkkala entered in relief to get a fly ball to end the inning. Wirkkala also gave up three runs after loading the bases to start the sixth inning.

CU hit .217 in the two games. Arcoleo joined Edwards to lead the Tigers with three hits each. Chin, Trent Seamons, Michael Durham and Luke Gadow each had a hit.

Campbellsville (4-8, 1-1 MSC) will travel to St. Catharine College for a four-game Mid-South Conference series this weekend. The Patriots (14-9-1, 2-2 MSC) will enter the series with a four-game win streak. SCC will host a 1 p.m. ET doubleheader Friday and a 12 p.m. ET doubleheader Saturday. Live stats will be available.
