Tigers win first men's track & field invite in program history

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Entering the final event of the day Saturday, Campbellsville University trailed first-place Eastern Kentucky University by one point, but sophomores Chris Brown and Dale Kerr placed in the javelin throw to give the Tigers their first outdoor track and field win in program history.

Brown, a sophomore from Pelham, Ala., posted a personal record with a javelin throw of 50.55 meters. He was one meter shy of first place behind Centre College's Alex Calhoun. The throw pushed Campbellsville to the top and was joined by Kerr's seventh-place finish of 42.72 meters.

"Chris Brown threw 50 meters into a strong wind today. Many people could have used the wind for an excuse, but he found a way to get it done for the team," CU head coach Joe Stockton said.

Campbellsville finished nine points ahead of NCAA Division I program EKU, 100.5 to 91.5.

Over the course of the day, Campbellsville claimed three first-place finishes in individual events, including claiming the top three spots in the triple jump for a combined 24 points. Detrick Briggs claimed top spot with a jump of 13.69 meters, followed by P.J. Randals' 13.35 meters and a 12.74-meter jump by freshman Timmy Perdue. Randals tied for first in the 110-meter hurdles race. He also finished third in the high jump and seventh in the long jump.

The Tigers beat Georgetown College for first-place in the 4x800 meter relay with distance runners Christian Black, Kody Hutchins, Armando Pina and Andrew Simmons.

Campbellsville will travel to Louisville next Saturday for the Bellarmine University Invitational.
