Tigers punch out No. 8 Union College, 10-1

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Defensive plays, solid pitching and 10 runs were the key for Campbellsville University in a non-conference win Wednesday night, upsetting No. 8 Union College, 10-1, at Tiger Field.

"This is a great way to enter the postseason," CU head coach Beauford Sanders said. "It's a big win against a quality opponent, but also it's how the guys played. They just had so much fire."

Campbellsville scored in five of the eight innings it came to the plate, including a 2-0 lead to start the game on RBI ground outs by Craig Edwards and Gabriel Arcoleo.

Union looked to tie the game or flip the score in the top of the second, as the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs before starting pitcher Colton Brown struck out his third batter of the inning fifth of the game to escape the inning. The threat continued in the third as leadoff hitter Cory Ragland singled to start the inning. An error on the play stretched him to second, but Ragland was thrown out at third trying to stretch further.

While Union would continue to get base runners throughout the game, the play at third was the start of key defensive plays to silence the Bulldogs. Campbellsville stuck 13 Union runners on base through the game.

"Union put pressure on us, but we'd make a big pitch or a big play to keep them from turning the corner. And the big thing is we kept adding on. We'd put a zero up in the top and score in the bottom, zero in the top and score in the bottom," Sanders said.

Union scored its only run in the fourth on a two-out, RBI single by Arthur Dockery. Campbellsville began to add its insurance in the fourth though, after ticking at least two Union runners on the diamond in each of the previous three innings.

Michael Durham drove in Arcoleo with a sac fly in the fourth, while Lapchak scored Michael Caleb with a sac fly in the fifth.

Leading 4-0, Campbellsville posted four unearned runs in the sixth. Aaron Schwoebel delivered the first RBI hit of the night for the Tigers with an RBI single to score the second CU run of the inning. Rylan Chin drove in the other two with a two-out triple to left. Campbellsvile added two more in the eighth, as Schwoebel tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch.

Chin, the Tigers' leadoff hitter led CU with a 3-for-3 night and two walks. He scored the first run of the night and also drove in two. Schwoebel, the freshman Campbellsville native, had two hits and two RBI, while Caleb also had two hits. No Union batter collected more than one hit.

On the mound, Colton Brown improved to 2-0 on the year, while Drew Chamberlain dropped his record to 2-2 for Union. Brown, who struck out five in the first two innings, finished with six strike outs, three walks, one run and six hits through 3 2/3 innings. Jeff Bjorklund, Jacob Cook and Michael Caleb combined for the relief effort.

Chamberlain gave up five of the Tigers' runs.

The Tigers begin the Mid-South Conference Tournament April 22-23 with a best-of-three series against the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Campbellsville, the MSC West champion, will host MSC East champion UVa.-Wise to determine the No. 1 seed for the rest of the MSC Tournament and the conference's regular season champion. Game one of the series will be played at 6 p.m. ET Friday, while Game Two will be Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Game Three of the series will follow Game Two on Saturday, if necessary.
