Lady Tigers rally for split in final regular season DH

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Staring a potential three-game losing streak in the face Thursday afternoon, Campbellsville University pushed four runs together in the bottom of the seventh to salvage a split out of their final regular season doubleheader. The Lady Tigers responded from an 8-1 loss to Cumberland University with a 7-6 night cap victory.

Trailing 6-3 in game two, Campbellsville chipped away at the Lady Bulldogs in the seventh inning with an RBI single by Brooke Boils and two-RBI double down the left field line by Bailey Dillender. With the game tied and runners on second and third, senior catcher Morgan Bullock delivered the game-winning hit to score Jennifer England and send the Lady Tigers into the postseason with a W.

Campbellsville started the game with a 1-0 first inning, as England tripled with one out to score Boils. However, Cumberland posted a four-spot in the third inning with a two-RBI single by Stephanie Gutierrez and a two-run homer by Megan Lavery. The Bulldogs ran the score to 6-1 in the fifth when Gutierrez hit a two-run shot for her second home run of the day.

The Lady Tigers began their rally in the sixth, as Boils led off the inning with a walk. While Boils was forced out on a fielder's choice the next at bat, Campbellsville scored two on a single to deep centerfield by Bullock. The senior catcher drove in three of the Lady Tigers' eight runs in the doubleheader and had three hits.

Martina Riney recorded the complete-game win for Campbellsville, despite giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks. Caity Gray gave up the loss after entering the game with two outs in the seventh.

In game one, Nichole Bohanon scored the lone Campbellsville run on an RBI double by Boils in the fifth inning.

The opening game of the doubleheader was plagued with errors, as Campbellsville posted four defensive mishaps, leading to five unearned runs for Cumberland.

Courtney Turpin (14-15) had three earned runs in the loss, pitching seven innings and giving up 12 hits.

Cumberland was led by leadoff hitter CaSarah Gilliam, who had two hits and three RBIs in the game, while Gutierrez and Sarah Murray each had home runs as part of a four-run sixth inning.

Campbellsville will take a week off in preparation for the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Millenium Park in Danville, Ky., April 29-May 1. The Lady Tigers will be the No. 3 seed from the MSC West and play the No. 2 seed from the MSC East at 1 p.m. ET April 29.
