Tigers one win away from MSC title and NAIA bid

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- After an hour rain delay, Campbellsvlle University used four timely bunts to help score five of its runs Friday in a 7-4 win over Mid-South Conference East Divsion champion University of Virginia's College at Wise. The game gives CU a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series between the two MSC divisional champions, which determins the MSC regular season champion.

The bunts began early for Campbellsville. After Rylan Chin and Danny Lapchak were each hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Craig Edwards sacrificed the two runners into scoring position to set up the Tigers' first runs. After Gabriel Arcoleo singled in Chin, Lapchak dove past UVa.-Wise catcher Kerby Bush on a suicide squeeze by Jameel Ziadeh.

Campbellsville added an insurance run in the fourth with an RBI double by Michael Durham after Jakosa led off the inning with a single to left. The innsurance run was just that, as the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth on a single by Mason Mays.
With a slim 3-2 lead, Campbellsville extended its lead by two with an RBI single by Aaron Schwoebel in the fifth. The lead grew to five in the sixth inning, as Michael Caleb laid down a one-out bunt single. Two batters later, he scored on a successful squeeze play hit by Lapchak. Arcoleo and Ziadeh also drove in runs in the inning.

UVa.-Wise (16-19) scored two unearned runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Louis Roa.

The Tigers and starting pitcher Rusty Devitt avenged a 1-0 loss to the Cavaliers from their first MSC game of the season. Devitt pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs off seven hits and a walk. He struck out nine. Andrew Shoemaker struck out one in the eigth, while Drew Pettit retired all three outs in the ninth by strikeout, despite giving up two unearned runs and one hit.

Lapchak, Arcoleo, Ziadeh and Durham each had two hits to account for eight of the Tigers' 12 base knocks.

Roa and firstbaseman Kirk Jennings each had two hits for the Cavaliers.

Campbellsville (28-17) is scheduled to host game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. With a 100 percent chance of rain Saturday, the game time may be moved up to 11:30 a.m., if the weather is better. The game will be broadcast on WLCU 88.7 FM and iHigh.com/CampbellsvilleTigers.
