Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- A pair of four-run innings late in the game were too much to overcome Wednesday, as No. 26 Campbellsville University dropped a non-conference game to No. 18 Cumberland University, 13-3.
The Tigers fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning after T.J. Murphy drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI single by Mike Mandarino. After
Michael Caleb retired the Bulldogs in order in the second and third,
Gibby Briones led off the bottom of the third with a walk and later scored on a sac fly by
Craig Edwards to even the score.
Mandarino regained the Bulldogs' lead in the fourth with a solo home run to left. Tommy Crews stretched the lead, scoring on a wild pitch.
Campbellsville left a runner on base in the fourth and fifth before Cumberland broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out before pushing across its four runs.
The Tigers snagged two runs in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with a lead-off, first-pitch homer by
Gabriel Arcoleo.
Jameel Ziadeh later drove in
Michael Durham on a sac fly. Durham led all hitters with a 4-for-5 night.
In the eighth, Cumberland posted another four-spot, as Murphy drove in one run, and then Cory Farris knocked in two runs and scored on an error to stretch the Bulldogs lead to 11-3.
In the ninth, Daniel Harrison hit a pinch hit, two-run home run for his first hit of the season to give Cumberland 13 runs, while Durham drove in
Danny Lapchak for Campbellsville's final run.
Michael Caleb (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season. He tossed four and two-third innings, allowing three runs off five hits and a walk. He struck out three. Matt Vance (4-1) recorded the win after six innings of work.
Campbellsville (21-12) will host Trevecca Nazarene University on Thursday for a non-conference game at 12:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on WLCU 88.7 FM in Taylor County and surrounding areas. It will be the first sports broadcast on Campbellsville University’s new FM radio station.
