Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. â€" Campbellsville University rallied back from an early 5-0 deficit to force extra innings, but it was Trevecca Nazarene University who came out on top in an 8-5, 13-inning game Thursday at Tiger Field.
The Trojans scored two in the first on RBI hits by Chad Reynolds and Mitch McClay and drove in three more in the third from the bats of Trae Weiss, Matt Tidwell and another by Reynolds.
But while Trevecca put an early damper on the Tigers’ mid-day game, Campbellsville evened the score with a five-spot in the fifth. With one out in the inning,
Danny Lapchak took a two-out pitch off his right knee to reach base. After back-to-back singles from
Craig Edwards and
Gabriel Arcoleo the bases were juiced for
Michael Durham. The centerfielder singled to right and was followed by base hits from
Aaron Schwoebel and
Gibby Briones for back-to-back-to-back RBIs and cutting the lead to 5-3.
With the go-ahead run on first, Trevecca relief pitcher Craig Stem lost control of two wild pitches in a pinch-hit at bat against
Anthony Jakosa. The first scored Durham, while Schwoebel beat Stem in a close, diving play at the plate. After walking Jakosa and
Luke Gadow, Campbellsville looked to take the lead, but Dylan Kuhn took over on the mound and stranded the Tigers.
The score went unchanged through the 12th inning, as
Andrew Shoemaker,
Drew Pettit and
Jeff Bjorklund held the Trojans scoreless in relief. Pettit led the Tigers’ staff with six strikeouts in three innings of work.
Michael McBride took over for the Tiger pitching staff in the top of the 13th with runners on first and second. After the Trojans loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice, McBride struck out Matt Dobbins for the first out of the inning. However, Trevecca pushed across two runs on an errant throw by Lapchak on a play at home. McBride later allowed another run with a wild pitch. Reynolds, who was 4-for-7 with two RBIs in the game, scored the winning run for the Trojans.
Kuhn retired the Tigers in order in the bottom half of the inning for the win. He pitched 8 2/3 innings in relief, striking out eight.
Bjorklund took the loss for the Tigers. Offensively, Schwoebel led CU with three hits, with three hits coming from each Lapchak, Edwards and Durham.
Campbellsville (21-13, 15-3 MSC) will travel to Pikeville College for a four-game Mid-South Conference series Saturday and Sunday. The series has been moved back a day due to rain. Game times are still to be announced.
