CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Lady Tiger softball extended its win streak to eight games Saturday with a Mid-South Conference doubleeader sweep of University of Rio Grande RedStorm. Martina RIney pitched Campbellsville University to a 4-0 shutout to start the day and the Lady Tigers capped the day with a 2-1 win.
After Riney retired Rio in order to start game one, the storm arrived, pushing the game into an hour rain delay with dime-sized hail.
When play resumed,
Alex Jane Clemmons ripped a 2-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a leadoff home run. Campbellsville followed with a three-run second inning.
Jordan Cornett scored on an error after reaching base on a one-out single and stealing second and third. After loading the bases with two outs, the Lady Tigers pushed two more across on a double from
Kacie Vincent. CU's rally came to end with the bases loaded when Rio's Anna Smith struck out
Bailey Dillender.
Rio's only real threat came with two outs and two runners in scoring position in the fifth. Riney got Smith to pop up to Cornett at second on a 2-2 count to end the inning.
Riney recorded the shutout in the circle after allowing five hits and walking two.
In the second game, Campbellsville took a 1-0 lead in the third. Clemmons led off the inning with a single and swipped second before advancing to third on a ground out by Vincent.
Jennifer England singled in the run and later drove in Clemmons again in the fifth after she doubled to start the inning.
Rio scored its first run of the day with a two-out RBI triple by Stevie Sharp to score Smith. That cut the Lady Tigers lead in half, 2-1 in the top of the sixth. Turpin escaped the Red Storm's threat by getting Marissa Lennox to pop up to short.
Courtney Turpin allowed one run on seven hits and a walk for the win. She struck out six.
Campbellsville (23-20, 13-5 MSC) travels to University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday and returns home to Veterans Memorial Park on Thursday for another doubleheader against Cumberlands.
