Tigers drop to NAIA losers' bracket after 18-6 loss

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Thursday simply wasn't the Tigers' day. After allowing eight walks, 13 hits and three errors, Campbellsville University dropped to the losers' bracket of the NAIA Tournament Opening Round with an eight-inning, 18-6, loss to Brewton-Parker College.

The Tigers will now face fourth-seed William Carey University at 10 a.m. Friday. WCU was knocked off in the first game of the tournament by Edward Waters College, 10-7.

Campbellsville and BP were tied 2-2 after two innings of play, but Brewton-Parker had solo homers in the third and fourth innings (Josh Palmer and Fernando Frias) to spark a string of runs with the wind blowing out to left at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Sliwa Stadium.

The two solo blasts gave the Barons a 4-2 lead after four, but the real damage came in the fifth, when Campbellsville gave up a seven-spot in the top half of the inning. Tiger starter Rusty Devitt exited in the fifth with one out and was charged the loss after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on five walks and three hits. CU went on to use five relief pitchers, while Brewton-Parker used only two after Daniel Jones secured the win after 7 1/3.

Campbellsville responded in the bottom of the fifth with a four-hit, two-out rally that scored two on RBIs by Gabriel Arcoleo and Michael Durham. Danny Lapchak (2-for-5) started the rally with a two-out single. After reliever Colton Brown stuck the Barons with a goose egg in the sixth, Craig Edwards (4-for-5) delivered a two-out RBI single to score Michael Caleb and cut a once nine-run deficit down to six, 11-5.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Barons weren't done. In the sixth, Brewton-Parker took advantage of an error and pushed across three runs on four hits to regain their nine-run lead, 14-5. Michael Pleau and Derrick Fox drove in two of the three runs for BP. Each went 2-for-4 in the game with three RBIs to lead the Barons' offense. Jacob Evors also had three RBIs.

Durham (2-for-5) doubled to start the seventh and scored the Tigers' final run on a fielder's choice RBI by Tony Rossetto. Brewton Parker added four runs in the eighth to enforce the mercy rule.

The Tigers' first two runs came in the second inning after Jameel Ziadeh (2-for-3) led off the inning with a triple to left center and scored on an error. Trent Seamons, courtesy running for Anthony Jakosa, scored on an RBI hit by Rylan Chin.

At the end of the day, both teams were even in hits with 13.

Friday's schedule begins with CU taking on William Carey at 10 a.m. The winner will advance to the 6 p.m. game against the loser between Brewton-Parker and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, who will meet at 2 p.m.
