Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University was out hit 8-2 through the first six innings Sunday, but that didn't keep the Tigers from rallying for a 6-3 win over University of Virginia's College at Wise in a Mid-South Conference Tournament elimination game at Tiger Field.
Wise took advantage of a three-run third inning off MSC Pitcher of the Year
Michael McBride to take an early 3-0 lead. Luis Roa doubled in the first two runs and Kirk Jennings drove in the Cavaliers' third run with a ground out. The three earned runs are the most allowed by the Tiger pitcher this season.
After McBride allowed the eight hits, he was replaced with
Andrew Shoemaker in the fourth inning, who pitched four scoreless innings in middle relief to buy time for the Tiger offense to get going.
Campbellsville scored its first run of the day in the sixth after
Craig Edwards led off the innings with a walk.
Gabriel Arcoleo, who came to CU with power numbers, laid down his first sac bunt of the season to move Edwards into scoring position. After a ground out by
Jameel Ziadeh, Edwards scored on an error on a ground ball by
Michael Durham.
Another leadoff walk aided the Tigers in the seventh to tie the score, 3-3. Ziadeh received a free pass to start the bottom of the seventh and scored on Durham's 11
th double of the season. After
Trent Seamons' bunt attempt failed,
Anthony Jakosa singled past second to score Durham and even the score to spark a rally with one out.
Campbellsville mixed its lineup in the seventh, pinch hitting Seamons,
Steve Oiler and
Luke Gadow in the inning, as well as putting relief pitcher
Ryan Richardson in the game as a courtesy runner for Jakosa. Richardson stole third with two outs but was left stranded.
After Campbellsville evened the score,
Jacob Cook and
Drew Pettit took over in the eighth. Campbellsville took the lead with a three-run eighth Arcoleo singled in the eighth with one out and stole second before Richardson came in to run again for the Tigers. After Ziadeh struck out, Durham was hit by a pitch to put two on for
Aaron Schwoebel. The Campbellsville native delivered a two-out single to left -center to score Richardson as the winning run. Jakosa singled in Durham to add an insurance run and Schwoebel singled in
Pettit (1-0) shutdown the Cavaliers in the ninth for CU to record his first career win of the year as the Tigers' closer.
Campbellsville will now face St. Catharine College in the loser's bracket final later this week. Due to final exams at St. Catharine and Shawnee State University, the tournament will be postponed until Friday, May 6. CU will host the SCC Patriots on Friday afternoon or evening, followed by the MSC Tournament championship on Saturday, May 7, as weather permits. Game times are to be announced later in the week.
