CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville erased an 11-point first-half deficit with an 18-4 run to start the second half and beat the Lindsey Wilson Lady Blue Raiders 77-65 in a hotly-contested Mid-South Conference game Thursday night.
There were a lot of special plays for the Lady Tigers.
Hayley Hellyer had eight first-half points when the Lady Tigers (14-6, 5-2) most needed them and
Mary Jehlik scored all 12 of her points after intermission.
"This is a big-big win for us," said Coach
Ginger Colvin. "They're a legitimate final four team. They have it all .... they have a point guard, a post and they're deep."
It was Campbellsville's sixth against the Lady Raiders and their fourth straight conference win after starting the season 0-2 in the MSC.
During CU's 18-4 second-half run, Jehlik scored six with four each by
Chelsea Craig,
Mackenzie Lee and
Katie Allen. LWC cut the 50-42 lead to 52-49 with seven straight points. Later a
Keisha Compton layup gave the Lady Tigers a 61-49 lead.
Lindsey (14-6, 3-4) was ice cold from the 3-point line with only four buckets in 26 tries. But All-American Ashley Rainey was all everything from the inside. She had 23 points at the half and fellow teammate Monny Niamke added 13. The duo led LWC with 55 of their 65 points with 35 and 20, respectively. Rainey led all rebounders with 18.
"They are better shooters than that, but we were running at them and, I think, did a pretty good job. We were just solid. We carried out our game plan better in the second half."
Lee led the Lady Tigers with 17, 10 in the first half. She was joined in double figures by Jehlik (12) and Craig (11). But
Katie Allen, who scored nine points, also had an equal number of assists."
"Katie makes our team go," said Colvin. "Gosh, she was a point and an assist away from a double-double.
Megan Isaacs scored nine points off the bench and Hellyer ended up with eight. Craig led the team with nine boards and Clifton added 6. Campbellsville's bench outscored Lindsey 23-3. CU hit 20-23 of its free throws.
"We were amped up for this game," said Colvin. "I had to run them out of the gym last night. I just don;t know how we got 11 points down to a team like that an won."
The Lady Tigers are right back in action Saturday when they host league-leading University of the Cumberlands in Mid-South Conference play. Tipoff at 2:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
