Allen steps up in OT, Lady Tigers win 84-78

WISE, Va. -  Katie Allen saved her best for last, scoring six of her 14 points in overtime, as the Lady Tigers escaped on Saturday with an 84-78 overtime win against UVa. Wise.

"We won this one on heart today," said Coach Ginger Colvin, "And we haven't played with a ton of it so far this year. We just gutted it out."

Wise out-shot the Lady Tigers by 30 percentage points and won the battle of the boards 66-44. But CU (12-6, 3-2) hit 27-33 from the free throw line and turned the Lady Cavaliers over 30 times. CU's 27 made free throws equaled its number of made field goals.

"They (Wise) have played everybody tough. They've been in all their conference games," said Colvin. "They have three girls who can play for anybody."

Campbellsville trailed by as many as nine in the first half before a late rally put the Lady Tigers up 46-39 at intermission. Courtney Clifton, who fouled out with six minutes to go in the game, scored 14 points in the final 5:44 to help CU go on an 18-9 run during that time.

But as easy as the lead was regained, Campbellsville found itself behind in the second half by seven, 66-59, when Clifton fouled out. But Lee hit 5-6 free throws the rest of the way and Keisha Compton scored four of her 10 points in the last three minutes to help earn the regulation tie, 72-72.

Lee had an opportunity to win the game in regulation when she was fouled with less than a second to play. But she missed the first and made the second.

"Making that second free throw, the hardest one, was big for us," said Colvin. "But Katie Allen gets the game ball. My goodness, to step up and hit that three. She needed that for her confidence."

Mary Jehlik hit back-to-back jumpers as CU pushed out to a 77-74 overtime lead. After Kristin Mullins scored for Wise (2-13, 0-6), Allen drilled a 3 at 1:45 and then hit two free throws that gave the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the game, 84-76.

Wise's Chelsea Cluesman led all scorers with 29 points and had 20 rebounds. Clifton led CU with 22 points and was joined in double figures by Allen and Jehlik with 14, Lee 13 and Compton 10. Jehlik led CU with 8 rebounds. Campbellsville only turned the ball over seven times.

"We have a young team and our players are going to have to step up." said Colvin. "We took a step in that direction, playing with our two leading scorers in foul trouble."

Lee was benched with her third foul with seven minutes to go in the first half, but played the rest of the way without committing another.

The Lady Tigers will not return to action until Saturday when they host St. Catharine in Mid-South Conference play. Tipoff at 2:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
