Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Campbellsville Lady Tiger soccer team walked off the field with their heads hanging on Friday night after losing to Trevecca Nazarane University, 2-1. CU thought it had tied the game with only 30 seconds left on the clock, but officials disallowed the goal, making the Trojans victorious.
"This was a tough loss for us," said Coach Thom Jones. "We played with no loss or passion and we're lucky it wasn't worse. If we don't learn from this we might not even qualify for nationals."
Trevecca took a total of five shots in the first half, three of which were taken by sophomore Brooke Gann. The Trojan midfielder capitalized with 15 minutes left in the period after Tiger keeper Brandie Hagerman was drawn out of the goal on a cross. Hagerman dove after the ball, which bounced off her hands and found its way to the foot of freshman Anna Hoffman. Hoffman fired one towards the goal, missing on the right goalpost. Gann hopped in front of the rebound and unleashed a kick into the left top corner of the net, while Hagerman still was getting to her feet, for the first goal of the game.
The Lady Tigers only accomplished three shots in the first half, with one on goal, that being from senior midfielder Cassie Yannelli. Keeper Bekah Headrick had the save, leaving the team scoreless going into the locker room.
CU entered the second half with a new wind, unloading three shots in the first 10 minutes before one finally found its way past Headrick. Junior defender Savanna Stephens fired a kick down the field from the mid-field line to midfielder Toria Alsip. The score came only a moment after Alsip entered the game her first minutes of the night.
The Trojans didn't cave, though, and responded 15 minutes later with a goal from junior midfielder Becky Bartos, making the score 2-1 Trevecca.
It seemed that time was dwindling for the Lady Tigers, but hope rose with only 30 seconds on the clock as Yannelli rushed to the sideline for a corner kick. The crowd roared as the ball made its way through the hands of Headrick, but emotions quickly turned to anger as the officials blew their whistle for a Tiger foul.
The loss puts CU at 5-5-1 on the season.
Hagerman had five saves on the night.
The next Lady Tiger game will be on the road at Lindsey Wilson College on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Start time will be 6 p.m. EDT. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
