Ralph's goal advances CU to championship

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A solo goal proved to be the only one needed for Campbellsville University to defeat Union University and advance to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Regional Tournament championship game. Junior forward Jessica Ralph scored the lone goal early in the second half to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 win over Union.

"It feels good to get the win, especially with a shut-out," said head coach Thom Jones. "It was a good game by both teams and a hard-fought battle that I'm glad to be on the winning end of. Now we have to take care of business tomorrow."

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the initial 45 minutes, but Union's offense took charge, with seven shots as opposed to CU's one. Senior midfielder Stefanie King accounted for three of those, two being on goal.

Three Bulldog shots came back-to-back-to-back in the 26th minute, but the Lady Tigers were determined to keep the ball out of the goal. The first kick came from King, with a save from junior CU keeper Brandie Hagerman. Junior midfielder Dionna Linn fired another off of the deflection, which Lady Tiger defender Bailey McDonough hustled inside the goal to block. The Bulldogs were persistent, and yet another shot was fired from junior Rachael Baswell, which McDonough once again blocked with a header.

The single Lady Tiger shot of the half came on a corner kick from senior Cassie Yannelli, with a save from Bulldog keeper Emily Waggoner.

It didn't take CU long into the second half to find the net. A corner kick from McDonough in 12th minute of the period allowed junior forward Jessica Ralph to head one in past Waggoner. The goal was Ralph's 13th of the season and the only scored in the 90-minute match-up.

Union ended their season with a 8-10-1 record.

Campbellsville (11-8-1) will advance to the NCCAA Regional Championship tomorrow night, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at Citizens Bank Field at Finley Stadium. They will play the winner of the Covenant College-Trevecca Nazarene University semifinal game. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
