CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The Lady Tigers were able to hold off UVA-Wise's top-scorer Chelsea Cluesman for a 73-64 win over the Mid-South Conference (MSC) opponent. Cluesman still totaled of 36 points in the match-up, but CU responded with three double-digit scorers.
"Wise's record doesn't reflect what they are capable of," said head coach Ginger Colvin. "They are a well-coached team with a ton of talent. We are absolutely thrilled to get that win today."
UVA-Wise (1-5) had the first bucket of the game from Cluesman, who would continue to be an impressive offensive threat the rest of the game. Senior CU guard Courtney Clifton responded with a three-pointer, but Cluesman scored yet again on the next possession, bringing the score to 4-3 Wise. The lead was the last of the half as CU's offense began rolling, but the Cavaliers continued to trail close behind, down only six (34-28) going into the locker room.
Wise came out after the 15-minute break by going on an 11-3 run in the first four minutes and taking the lead, 39-37. The lead bounced back and forth for a few possessions, CU eventually playing from behind for more than seven minutes.
Senior guard Keisha Compton put the Lady Tigers on top once again with eighth minutes to go with a two-point bucket. Clifton rocketed the energy quickly after, hitting a deep 3 from the right wing, which junior guard Katie Allen mirrored on the next possession, scoring yet another 3 from the same spot.
CU remained ahead the rest of the game despite Cluesman's 23-point half.
Three Lady Tigers racked up double digits points in the match-up. Mount Sterling, Ky. native Mackenzie Lee led the team with a total of 21 points, three shots being from behind the arc. She was followed by Clifton with 15 points, who also had three 3s. Mrashi Karumba clinched a double-double, scoring 12 of her own and picking up 10 rebounds.
Campbellsville is now 4-1 on the season, 2-0 in MSC play.
The Lady Tigers, ranked 13th in the nation, will face MSC rival and fellow Top 25 opponent, Lindsey Wilson College (17), at home next Tuesday, Nov. 20. Tip-off time is set for 6 p.m. at the CU Powell Athletic Center. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
