BAYAMON, Puerto Rico — Campbellsville scored the first 11 points of the game and raced to a 72-44 win today over the University of Puerto Rico — Mayaquez.
The victory moves the Lady Tigers to double-digit wins, 10-2, on the season.
"I thought we really handled their physicality," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "They play a little different style down here and sometimes the refs allow a little more contact."
CU got 12 first-half points from Mackenzie Lee and 11 from Courtney Clifton in constructing a 44-19 half-time lead. Clifton ended up leading all scorers with 19, hitting four 3-pointers, three in a row during a 1:30 span of the opening half.
Mayaguez had closed a 14-point lead to 24-15 on a 3 and a bucket by Adriana Perez. That's when Clifton went on her tear.
Keisha Compton hit one of two free throws and Mrashi Karumba hit a driving layup leading to the 25-point lead at intermission.
"I really have to respect our team for the way we've traveled," Colvin continued."Going the the beach is the only exercise we've had, the rest of the time we're sitting around, sleeping or eating.
"We came in and were focused from the get-go. We really responded and three o'clock (AST) is a horrible time to have to play a game. I'd rather play early of late, not the middle of the afternoon."
The Lady Tigers won the battle of the boards 51-29 with Chelsea Craig leading all players with seven. Lee finished with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.
"Mac was very physical going to the basket, but she's so strong she can overcome a lot of contact."
Everybody who dressed logged minutes in the lopsided win.
Caroline Owen had an interesting stat line. The sophomore from Carthage, Tenn. only scored a point, but had five rebounds, five assists and a steal in 13 minutes.
Stephanie Rodriguez led Mayaguez with 14 points.
