Campbellsville turns triple play to start two-win day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. -- Campbellsville University turned a triple play in the third inning Friday to protect a one-run lead en route to a 5-3 victory over No. 15 Missouri Baptist University at Union University's Fesmire Field. The Tigers followed up the game with a 2-1 win over No. 14 Union.
 


With runners on first and second in the third inning of game one, Danny Lapchak snagged a line drive by Scott Krutel. Lapchak, getting his first start of the season at second base, started the first known triple play in Campbellsville history with a toss to shortstop Tanner Nielsen who threw on to Brandon Johnson at first base.

The Tigers started the day with a 2-1 first inning, pushing runs across on a sac fly by Chance Kopacz and an RBI singl eby Marc Garza.

Following the triple play to get out a jam in the third inning, Campbellsville strengthened its lead with a one-out double by Johnson, followed by an RBI triple from Trent Seamons. Michael Durham scored Seamons on a sacrifice squeeze to strengthen the lead, 4-1. CU starter Michael McBride struck out the side in the fourth and gave up one run in the fifth on a sac fly by Ryan Barban before exiting the game after five innings. He struck out seven in his first win of the season.

Missouri Baptist pushed across its final run in the seventh on a single from Kyle Turner to score Barban. Barban also scored the first MBU run in the bottom of the first on a single from Kyle Hardy.

In the Tigers' second game, Ryan Richardson went the distance in a pitchers' dual, striking out five and allowing one run off three hits and three walks.

Richardson gave up a run to Union in the bottom of the fouth when catcher Doug Joyce hit a sac fly to score Clint Barnes.

Campbellsville evened the score in the fifth after Seamons led off the inning with a bunt single and later scored on a ground out RBI by Neilsen. CU stretched its lead in the sixth, as Rylan CHin doubled in Clint McCamish for the game-winning run. Richardson put two runners on in the seventh before getting a pop fly to end the game.

Tanner Nielsen came up big again for the Tigers, collecting three hits in the two games. Marc Garza, Brandon Johnson and Rylan Chin each had two hits on the day.
The day began with Union University defeating Missouri Baptist, 4-3, to start the tripleheader at Fesmire Field.

Campbellsville (3-0) is scheduled to host Asbury University for a doubleheader Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. Games originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19 have been canceled due to pending weather.
