Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Campbellsville University held off the University of Rio Grande down the stretch for its first Mid-South Conference road victory of the season, 64-56, Thursday evening.
"I don't care if it is 82-80 or 42-40, a win on the road in this conference is a win," said CU head coach Keith Adkins. "I'm proud of our guys, because it's a long trip up here. We didn't play great, but it was good enough to win."
Campbellsville and Rio played a tightly contest first 10 minutes of basketball, but it was a steal by
Cedric Henderson and dunk by
Reggie Smith that helped open the Tigers' lead. CU went on a nine-point run in the final five minutes, including two 3s from
Jordan Myers to stretch its lead to 29-19. Tykeim Moss cut the margin to seven, 29-22, with a 3-pointer before halftime.
In the second half, Henderson rolled out 14 points to lead all scorers with 26 in the game. He scored a layup-plus one early in the second period to give the Tigers a 12-point lead, 40-28. With about seven minutes left, the RedStorm closed the margin to three points, but
Bryton Taylor sank a 3-pointer with one second on the shot clock to boost the game back to six. CU maintained a two- to three-possession lead the rest of the way.
Jonas Bohm was second in scoring with 14 points and Myers had 10.
"No excuses we just didn't step up and make some of those (shots) in the first half. In the second half, Cedric kind of got his legs," Adkins said. "I say it all the time, there's no better guard in our league (than
Cedric Henderson), and if there's a better one in the country, I haven't seen or heard of him."
Campbellsville (16-7, 5-6 MSC) continues its road trip Saturday, Feb. 4 with a trip the West Virginia Tech. The Tigers will take on the Golden Bears in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast live on WLCU 88.7 FM and online at wlcufm.com.
