CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- After racking up a dozen runs in the first game, Campbellsville out lasted Huntington University in a night cap pitchers' duel to sweep the Foresters, 12-4 and 2-1, Friday at Tiger Field.
In the first game of the day,
Jacob Cook improved to 2-0 on the hill with a complete-game victory against the Foresters in their first outing of the season. Huntington posted a four-spot on Cook out of the gate on two walks, a hit and an error. But the senior retired 12 of the next 16 batters he faced.
Cook's run support began in the second with
Marc Garza leading off with the Tigers' first hit of the day. He scored on a
Trent Seamons RBI groundout and
Keaton Neeb knocked in Schwoebel to cut the Huntington lead in half.
Garza did it again in the third, singling with one out to start a five-run inning. He scored on an RBI single by Garza to pull CU within a run, while
Rylan Chin and Neeb followed with back-to-back doubles to score three more runs to push Campbellsville in front.
Tanner Nielsen singled in
Levi McCamish for the fifth run of the inning and a 7-4 Tiger lead. Garza and Neeb led CU with three hits each in the game.
Schwoebel added an insurance run in the fourth with an RBI single to score
Brandon Johnson.
In the fifth,
Danny Lapchak pushed the Tigers above the 10-run mark with his first career grand slam as a Tiger. The blast to left-center scored
Rylan Chin,
Levi McCamish and
Tanner Nielsen to wrap up the scoring for CU in the game.
Game two was a flat out pitchers' duel between last year's Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Year,
Michael McBride (2-0), and Huntington senior Ethan Tribolet (0-1). Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings and combined for an average of only 3.3 pitches per batter faced throughout the game.
With a mixture of rain, sleet and snow falling in the top of the fourth, McBride gave up a leadoff double to Blake Ayers, who later scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Jamon Hammel. McBride went on to get two more ground balls to exit the inning. He retired the next six batters he faced, striking out three of them, to finish with five Ks on the day.
In the bottom of the fifth, Campbellsville tacked two runs on the board to take the lead.
Aaron Schwoebel busted up Tribolet's no-hit bid with a two-out single to left. After stealing second, he advanced to third on an error and scored on an RBI single by
Michael Durham.
Keaton Neeb followed with an RBI double to score the winning run.
Schwoebel reached on a walk to lead off the third inning for the Tigers' only other base runner in the game. He finished the day hitting 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI with and two stolen bases.
Campbellsville and Huntington will meet for another doubleheader Saturday at Tiger Field. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon ET.
