CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University baseball continued its undefeated season Saturday, improving to 9-0 with a doubleheader sweep over the Huntington University Foresters, 10-0 and 4-1.
In game one, the Tigers held a mere 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a solo homerun from shortstop
Tanner Nielsen to start the game. The Tigers' offense then exploded, posting six runs off four hits.
Trent Seamons singled to start the rally and advanced to second on a well-executed hit-and-run by
Michael Durham. A wild pitch from Xyan Adkisson placed both runners in scoring position, allowing Seamons to score on a single by Nielsen.
Danny Lapchak followed with a two-run blast to left-center field, and
Rylan Chin added a two-run homer in the inning, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
The Tigers extended their lead in the sixth inning with another three runs.
Gibby Briones drove in two with a double to left-center field, while
Ryan Squires drove in another.
Senior pitcher
Ryan Richardson had an excellent day on the mound. Richardson (2-0) completed six innings of work allowing only five hits, while striking out six.
Drew Pettit finished the game for the Tigers in the seventh and struck out two.
The Tigers then notched a 4-1 victory in the following game. CU took a 1-0 lead in the first, after Nielsen led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI hit by Briones. Both teams were held in check for the next two innings, before the Tigers extended their lead. Durham knocked a two-run homer, scoring
Marc Garza who had reached on a single. First base man Craig Edward also drove in a run in the inning.
The four runs would be all the Tigers would need, but the Foresters were able to post a run in the top of the fifth from a Jamon Hammel homer. The home run was one the only run allowed by CU pitcher
Tyler Roberts and one of only two hits. Roberts pitched six solid innings, striking out four Huntington batters.
Huntington rallied in the seventh, picking up two walks off reliever
Chad Leskiw in his Tiger debut. Leskiw got a fielder's choice and strikeout before Pettit took over for the final out to record his first save of the season.
Edwards led the Tigers with a 3-for-3 day, while Nielsen, Lapchak and Garza also had three hits each. Brandon Van Matre and Hamel were the only Forester with multiple hits, both going 2-for-6.
Campbellsville (9-0) returns to Tiger Field on Sunday to host Point Park University for a seven inning game at 1 p.m. ET.
