Point Park hands Campbellsville its first loss of 2012

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Errors proved costly Sunday for Campbellsville University baseball, as Point Park University closed its southern road trip with a 6-4 win over the Tigers. The loss snapped a nine-game win streak to start the 2012 season - Campbellsville's longest win streak since stringing together 11 Ws midway through the 2010 season.

Tiger starting pitcher Andrew Shoemaker allowed only a walk through three innings before Point Park produced a big fourth inning. The Pioneers pushed across three runs on three hits and two Tiger errors.

Dillon Sauers led off the fourth with a single and later scored on a one-out double by Javier Marticorena. Ossie Afonzo, who reached on a Marc Garza throwing error, scored the Pioneers' next run on a fielder's choice by Marlon Leyva and Marticornea also scored on the play after being hit in the helmet at third by an erroneous throw from CU shortstop Tanner Nielsen.

Campbellsville answered with two runs in the fifth. Keaten Neeb led off the inning with a single to center, followed by an infield hit for Michael Durham. Nielsen added a well-placed bunt to the left side of the diamond to load the bases for Danny Lapchak. The senior designated hitter, scored courtesy runner Levi McCamish on a sac fly to right to put Campbellsville on the board. Durham trotted across the plate on a balk by Park Point pitcher Nathan Sphon.

Another Nielsen error in the sixth allowed a Pioneer run, Don McDuffee scored on the throw after Javier Marticorena hit into a fielder's choice at short. Marticorena went on to score a wild pitch by Tiger reliever Drew Pettit, stretching the Pioneer's lead to 5-2.

Shoemaker exited the game after the run in the sixth, lasting 5 1/3 innings. He finished the day with five runs allowed, one earned, on four hits and three Tiger errors. Pettit pitched the last two outs of the sixth before leftfielder Gibby Briones took over on the mound for the seventh.

Briones gave up two hits in the seventh, including a two-out double by Bodnar and an RBI single from Alfonzo to stretch Point Park's lead, 6-2.

The Tigers stranded two base runners in the sixth, but produced a rally in the seventh.

Aaron Schwoebel led off the seventh by reaching on a misplayed grounder to first. Briones followed with a one-out single to place runners on the corners. Schwoebel scored CU's third run on a sac fly to right by Craig Edwards. Rylan Chin ripped a double down the leftfield line to bring in Briones and put the tying run at the plate, however Trent Seamons popped up to right for the final out of the game.

The rally was enough to close the book on Sphon, who allowed four runs, two earned, on 11 hits, two walks and one error through 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two. Mike Tullio entered in relief, needing only three pitches for the save.

Campbellsville (9-1) will begin travel to Berea College on Tuesday, Feb. 28 for its last non-conference game before the start of the Mid-South Conference season. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
