Lady Tiger swimmers compete in two relays Thursday

OKLAHOMA CITY - Lady Tiger swimming posted a season-high Thursday in its first event of the NAIA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College.

Campbellsville University cut nearly four seconds off its seed time of 2:08.54. CU finished 18th of 19 in the race with a time of 2:05.07.

CU closed the day by competing in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Tigers finished last in the race with a time of 9:19.33, more than 16 seconds over their season high. However, swim coach Casey Smith

Both relay teams saw new faces, as Carrie Wohlschlegel filled in on the freestyle races, as well as alternate Katie Kelien. Kelien, who was filling in for injured senior Ellen Hittson, had never swam a 200-yard freestyle race before being part of the 800-yard freestyle relay.

"We were last, but it was a relay that had never been together before," said CU head coach Casey Smith. "They worked hard!"

Fresno Pacific University holds a commanding lead in the team standings with 263 points, while Oklahoma Baptist is second with 196 points. Union College and University of the Cumberlands leads teams from Kentucky with 79 and 74 points, respectively. Asbury University has 45 points and is 10th overall, while Berea College has 12 points and Lindsey Wilson College has two.

The NAIA championships will continue Friday, with Campbellsville competing in the 200-yard freestyle relay as its only event of the day. Competition begins at 10 a.m. CT.
