CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville, playing in its own Classic, took down No. 17 Olivet Nazarene, 6-4, Saturday afternoon, but then dropped an 8-3 decision to Madonna.
There was a six-inning stretch spanning both games, the last three of the Olivet game and the first three of the Madonna game, when the Lady Tiger bats went to sleep.
Campbellsville 6, Olivet 4
The Lady Tigers burst out to a 6-0 lead and then limped through the last 3 ½ innings to defeat Olivet Nazarene in their first game of the CU Classic.
Jennifer England got CU (16-11) on the board in the second inning with a solo home run, and then watched her teammates post a five-spot in the bottom of the third.
Kristin Benton singled home
Emma Napier for the first run of the third and then
Heather Oakley lofted a three-run homer to center.
Courtney Turpin singled and England and
Brooke Boils walked. With two outs England scored when
Emma Napier's grounder was misplayed. Boils was thrown out trying to reach home.
After getting seven hits in its first three frames, CU managed just one more the remainder of the game. Olivet (19-5) scored three in the top of the fifth when two hits, two hit runners and an error pushed across ONU's first runs.
In the top of the sixth, Olivet got its last run with three consecutive singles with two outs.
Turpin picked up her ninth win with an eight-hitter. She saw an inning of relief by
Martina Riney, who retired three of the four batters she faced.
Dillender had a two-hit game, both singles. In addition of England's and Oakley's homers, Napier had a double and Benton, Cornett and Turpin all hit safely.
Madonna 8, Campbellsville 3
Campbellsville trailed 7-0 before a three-spot gave some hope against Madonna (12-9). Campbellsville (16-12) only got two more hits the rest of the game, however.
After Cornett reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the third and crossed home on Benton's two-run shot to center. An out later, Oakley homered as well. But that was the end of the scoring for the Lady Tigers.
Marina Riney gave up a run in the third off Jackie Barley's two-out home run. Riney got in bigger trouble in the fourth when she loaded the bases on two walks and a bunt single. Three runs scored before
Taylor Wroe came with two outs. She was greeted by a two-RBI double and an RBI single.
That was all the scoring Madonna would need, but they tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth anyway.
The Lady Tigers were outhit 10-7. Oakley had a single to go with her homer. Turpin had three hits, all singles. Napier and Benton closed out the CU hitting with one each.
Campbellsville will close out the Classic on Sunday when it hosts Calumet in a double header, starting at 1:00.
