Tigers race past Patriots 68-48 into MSC Tourney semifinals

Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. - It took Campbellsville some time to start feeling its oats, but after the Tigers found their feed bag they played like a thoroughbred, beating St. Catharine 68-48 in the quarter-finals of the MSC Tournament.

"That is as good as we can play, what we did in the second half," said Coach Keith Adkins. "It's not that we played bad in the first half, but we didn't compete like we did in the second. We were really good on defense."

Three CU players picked up a foul in the first two minutes of the game and Justin Ennis sat 11 minutes of the first half with SCC leading 14-11. Campbellsville played from behind and needed at buzzer-beating 3 from Cedric Henderson to trail by only one, 25-24, at intermission.

"That shot at the half can really help and, I think, it energized us," Continued Adkins. "We had two assists at half and we started moving the ball better in the second half and kicking it out for open looks."

Campbelsville hit 33 percent of its 3s. And improved its field goal percentage to 46 percent for the game after hitting only 35 in the initial 20 minutes.

"We've played them three times and I think we're the only team that has kept them in the 50s," said Adkins. "And we did it all three times. Sometime the match-ups go your way."

The Tigers (21-12) would score the first six points of the second half, all by Henderson, and took a 30-25 lead that they would never lose. CU would go on a 10-2 run after that to lead by 40-29 as Reggie Smith scored five points.

Henderson led the Tigers with 20 points, three assists and six steals. He was joined in double figures by Reggie Smith (13) and Ennis (12).

DeShawn Mitchell led St. Catharine (14-13) with 16 points.

Campbellsville reversed a rebound deficit in the second half, closing to within 36-31 after trailing 22-11 at the intermission.

The Tigers play again Saturday at 8:00 against Georgetown, a 79-71 overtime winner over UVa.-Wise.  The 6 p.m. men's game matches Lindsey Wilson College and University of the Cumberlands. Lindsey beat Rio 51-48 and Cumberlands was a 68-50 winner over Pikeville. The CU game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7).
