Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. - After controlling the game for eight innings, Campbellsville University watched its six-run lead vanish in the ninth, as No. 7 Cumberland University rallied with a seven-run inning to squeak past the Tigers, 9-8, at Woody Hunt Stadium Tuesday.
Â
Campbellsville secured four runs of insurance in the top of the ninth with the help of a fielder's choice RBI by
Gibby Briones and three-run home run from
Chance Kopacz. However, an error at first base to start the bottom of the ninth gave the Bulldogs hope.
Hope turned into momentum when Cumberland strung together three one-out singles. Nick Sydnor, who reached on the error scored the first run of the rally on an RBI from Richie Seaton. With two outs, the Bulldogs poured on six more unearned runs for the win. Starting pitcher Cody Ferrell won it for the Bulldogs with a two-RBI single through the right side off Tiger reliever
Rusty Devitt.
Campbellsville began the day strong, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a two-out home run by Briones. CU went on to scatter three runs over the next two innings.
In the second,
Rylan Chin led off the inning by reaching on an error after battling a full count. He scored on an RBI line-out to center by
Michael Durham. Campbellsville pushed across two runs on three hits in the third with RBI singles by Kopacz and Chin.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth through eighth.
Cumberland scored its first two runs in the second and third on a two-out RBI single by Tyler Wheeler and a solo homer to left by Brodie Ross.
Â
Following the home run, Tiger starting pitcher
Phillip Gerber found a zone to retire 14 of his next 16 batters through the seventh. Cumberland collected back-to-back, two-out singles in the eighth, but Gerber used a groundball to get out of the jam.
Gerber received a no-decision after going 8 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs, but only two earned.
Tyler Roberts recorded the loss after walking the bases loaded and giving up a single. Gerber struck out only three, as he relied heavily on his defense. First baseman
Brandon Johnson had 14 putouts, mostly off the assists of Chin at second and Briones at third. Johnson also had CU's only error of the game.
Trent Seamons and Kopacz each made big catches for the Tigers to take away potential extra base hits and keep the Bulldogs from starting rallies in other innings.
Cumberland recorded 15 hits in the game, 13 off Gerber and mostly in the ninth. Campbellsville recorded 11 hits, with each Tiger batter collecting at least one.
Danny Lapchak and Kopacz were the only multiple-hit Tigers, as Kopacz finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Briones, who led all players with three of CU's five stolen bases, had two RBIs.
Logan Neal (2-0) picked up the win with four innings of relief work, allowing four runs off three hits and two walks. Ferrell received a no decision after five innings of work, allowing four runs off eight hits and a walk.
Campbellsville (21-5) will travel to No. 12 Union College for a non-conference game Wednesday in Barbourville, Ky. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT.
