Lady Tigers skunk Asbury in double-header softball sweep

WILMORE, Ky. - Three Campbellsville pitchers combined for 14 innings of shutout softball as the Lady Tigers swept Asbury Thursday night, 5-0, 2-0, in a mid-week non-conference double header.

Campbellsville 5, Asbury 0

Courtney Turpin's second-inning homer gave the Lady Tigers the working margin they would need to down Asbury, 5-0, in the first game of a Thursday double header.

Turpin was also on the business end of a five-inning, two-hitter as the sophomore from Lawrenceburg, Ky. picked up her 11th win against six defeats. Turpin gave up two walks and struck out three before seeing two innings of relief from Matina Riney. Riney retired six of the eight batters she faced, allowing just one hit.

CU (19-12, 4-1) got on the board in the first when Turpin plated Bailey Dillender, who reached on a one-out single. Dillender had another single in the fourth.

Emma Napier hit safely twice and Kacie Vincent and Jordan Cornett had one hit apiece. Brooke Boils had the only other extra-base hit with a double in the sixth.

The Lady Tigers scored two more runs in the third, aided by two Asbury errors. Vincent and Napier singled to lead off the inning. Vincent scored on a wild throw and Napier on a Cornett ground out to second.

Boils' sacrifice squeeze bunt in the fourth scored Amaris Vest, who was pinch running for Dillender.

Campbellsville 2, Asbury 0

Taylor Wroe fanned nine Asbury (5-15) batters as she pitched a two-hit gem in the Thursday nightcap. The sophomore from Hawesville ran her record to 8-1, allowing just a fourth-inning single to Emily Ethington and a sixth-inning hit to Kelsey Robinson.

Wroe got all the run support she would need in the third when Emma Napier scored on Jordan Cornett's single.

CU (20-12, 4-1) picked up an insurance run in the sixth when the Lady Tigers' score was unearned. Cornett struck out but reached on an error by the first baseman. Kristin Benton then doubled her to  third and Cornett scored on a passed ball. Benton had a single to go with her double.

Campbelsville gets back in conference play Saturday when the Lady Tigers host Pikeville in a double header, beginning at 1:00.
