Tigers finish third at Mount St. Joseph Invite

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Campbellsville University opened its outdoor track and field season with a third-place finish in the Mount St Joseph Invitational.

The Tigers had 105 points and were only 18 points behind second-place Mount St. Joseph. Capital University ran away with the meet, collecting 168 points.

"I know the rain started just before one on the distance races began and our kids ran well. It shows some toughness to our team," said CU head coach Joe Stockton.

PJ Randles picked up in the outdoor opener where he left off in the indoor season as the team leader in points. Randles collected 31 points with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and second-place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles and triple jump. He was fourth in the long jump.

David McKeller was the only other Tiger to place in the top two of an event, finishing second to Randles in the 110 hurdles.

Trevor Jarvis was the big surprise of the day. The sophomore shaved a minute and 34 seconds off his seed time in the 800-meter run to win the race in a time of 2:01.26. Christian Black (fourth) and Kody Hutchins (sixth) also placed in the race.

"Trevor was injured during the indoor season but his first-place finish in these conditions caught the eye of (distance) coach (Hilary) Cebulko and myself," said Stockton.

Jarvis' 10 points were part of 40 points combined by distance runners in the meet. Andrew Simmons had the second-highest distance finish, placing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Truman Padgett also had 10 points on the day with fourth-place finishes in the 400 hurdles and javelin. Cody Stockwell and Black each had nine points.

Jacob Holz collected seven of CU's distance points, while Kody Hutchins had five, Kyle Howdyshell had four.

Jayson Barnes had one point with an eighth-place finish in the 300-meter dash.

Campbellsville will return to competition Saturday, March 31 at the Hanover College Invitational in Hanover, Ind.
