LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A ninth-inning rally by the Tigers was overshadowed with a pinch hit, walk-off home run to lift Bellarmine University over No. 13 Campbellsville University, 8-7, at Knights Field Wednesday.
Campbellsville used a walk, single and walk to load the bases in the top of the ninth, and then pushed two runs across on an RBI walk by
Michael Durham and RBI hit-by-pitch for March Garza. With the bases loaded, Cory Thomas (2-0) struck out sophomore
Aaron Schwoebel to escape the inning for Bellarmine.
The Tigers left nine runners on base in the game, including seven in scoring position.
In the bottom half, freshman Andy Gehr pinch hit for Kristopher Sipes and homered to left off
Andrew Shoemaker (3-3) to be the hero for the Knights.
Campbellsville was victim of five defensive errors in the game, which led to four unearned runs.
Thomas recorded the win with two innings of relief work. He allowed two runs off one hit and three walks, while striking out four. He was the Knights' ninth pitcher of the game.
Shoemaker pitched 1 1/3 in the loss, allowing two runs off three hits. He struck out two.
Campbellsville got on the board first with a three-run second inning.
Brandon Johnson hit a solo homer down the leftfield line to start the inning.
Chance Kopacz, Garza,
Craig Edwards and
Trent Seamons each followed with singles to load the bases and drive in the first run on Seamons' RBI.
Carlos Torres followed with a sac fly to give CU a 3-0 lead and only one out.
However, Bellarmine answered in the bottom of the second with a three spot. Starting Tiger pitcher
Danny Bright hit two Knights to score runs with the bases loaded before another run came in on a wild pitch.
Garza, who was 2-for-4 on the day, helped put the Tigers in front with a leadoff double in the fourth. He scored on a ground out RBI by Seamons.
The Knights posted another three spot though in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Samuel Burke singled in one run and Brian Hockman had a two-RBI double to put Bellarmine in front.
Campbellsville narrowed the gap in the seventh with a run, but Bellarmine answered with an unearned run in the eighth to keep it a two-run margin entering the ninth.
Edwards joined Garza as the only other Tiger with two hits in the game. Hockman was 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Bellarmine.
