Tigers force baseball split at Mid-Continent

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MAYFIELD, Ky. -- A seventh-inning rally helped Campbellsville University salvage a doubleheader split Tuesday at Mid-Continent University. After dropping the first game, 5-2, the Tigers used the deep ball and small ball to push two runs across in the seventh inning of the night cap for a 3-2 victory.

Trailing 2-1, Michael Durham crushed a 1-2 pitch to right for his second home run of the season to lead off the seventh. Marc Garza followed with a double to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Trent Seamons entered the game as a pinch runner, and moved to third on a passed ball with one out. With the go-ahead run only 90 feet away, Tanner Nielsen laid down a sacrifice squeeze to score Seamons.

With the lead in hand, the Tigers put away the Cougars 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh for their 13th win of the season.

Mid-Continent scored both of its runs with home runs in the second game of the doubleheader. Jordan Manney homered to left to lead off the second and put MCU up 1-0, while Bennett had a solo shot to start the fifth and break a 1-1 tie.

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the third, after catcher Keaton Neeb doubled to start the inning. Couresy runner Levi McCamish moved to third on a sac bunt by Nielsen before scoring on a sac fly from Danny Lapchak.

Andrew Shoemaker recorded the complete game win for the Tigers, giving up two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out five and did not allow a walk. Tomas Rodriguez was charged with the loss in relief for MCU.

In the first game of the day, Mid-Continent (7-17) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the 5-2 win. Spencer Anderson collected a one-out double off Tyler Roberts in the first, followed with a walk by Richard Arias and a three-run homer from Cable McMinn.

Campbellsville posted its first run in the second inning after Chance Kopacz led off the inning with a single and moved to third on an error. Rylan Chin flew out to center to score Kopacz. The junior from Oregon pulled the Tigers within a run in the fourth after leading off the inning with a solo home run to right. MCU got the run back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring Manney on a fielder's choice by Uriel Hawkins. McMinn knocked in Hunter Bolden in the fifth for another insurance run.

The Tigers looked to rally in the sixth, as Garza doubled to lead off the inning. With one out, Chin walked and Durham reached on error to load the bases. A strikeout and ground out ended the inning, leaving the bases juiced with the tying run stranded on first. Nielsen reached on an error to start the seventh, but was doubled off to end the game.

Roberts records his first loss of the season after giving up five earned runs off seven hits and a walk. He struck out two. Seth McCabe was the winner for the Cougars, lasting 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and eight hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Campbellsville (13-3) will return home Wednesday to host Bellarmine University in a non-conference game at Tiger Field. Start time is 5 p.m. EST. It will be the 40th meeting all-time between the schools with Campbellsville leading the series 19-18-1 after CU beat the Knights, 8-6, last March in Louisville. CU is 15-12 against Bellarmine since Beauford Sanders took over the Tigers' program in 1991.
