Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Campbellsville University dropped its second straight Mid-South Conference game Friday, as Shawnee State University scattered seven runs over three innings in a 7-4 victory.
Tiger starter Ryan Richardson allowed only one hit through the first four innings of work. Campbellsville's hitters gave Richardson run support in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead on RBI singles by Tanner Nielsen, Gibby Briones and Craig Edwards.
Shawnee State answered in the fifth though, as Adam Wamsley had a one-out double and later scored on a two-out single by A.J. Gomez. After an error kept the inning alive, Gomez scored the first unearned run of the game on an RBI single by Ryan Burnett, to pull the Bears within a run, 3-2.
Campbellsville responded with an unearned run in the sixth, after Chance Kopacz singled and moved into scoring position on an error. Ryaln Chin singled to left to score Kopacz.
The Bears were only getting started offensively, adding another three runs off three hits in the sixth to gain a 5-4 lead. After Richardson gave up back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning, Cody Morrison was hit by a pitch to score Justin Marrero. Danny Gesick scored the second run of the inning as Wamsley reached on an error, and Cody Spires drove in courtesy runner Aaron Sudyam with a fielder's choice RBI.
Richardson exited the game in the sixth inning after facing five batters. He picked up his first loss of the season after giving up five runs, four earned, off seven hits.
Shawnee State added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth after Tiger reliver Philip Gerber gave up two one-out singles and a walk to load the bases. Everman got a two-RBI single off Briones before the third baseman/pitcher worked out of the inning.
Both teams finished the day with 10 hits each, led by Briones' 3-for-4 day. Chin, Wamsley and Everman each had two hits.
The Tigers (14-4, 2-2 MSC) and Bears (10-13, 1-3 MSC) will return to action Saturday in a Mid-South Conference doubleheader beginning at noon EST.
