Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University dealt University of the Cumberlands a mercy-rule defeat, 13-3, Friday night in game one of a weekend Mid-South Conference series at Tiger Field.
The Tigers used a four-run first and four-run sixth for the meat of its 13 runs against the Patriots.
Chance Kopacz drove in four of those runs, mostly with a three-run homer in the sixth.
Marc Garza (2-for-3) and
Michael Durham (3-for-4) each drove in two.
After
Tanner Nielsen walked to start the game,
Danny Lapchak beat out a bunt down the first base line to spark the Tigers' first inning offense. CU's runs scored on a two-run single by
Marc Garza and an RBI single by
Michael Durham, which also allowed Garza to score.
In the second, Tony Rossetto singled to start the inning, leading to CU's fifth run of the day on a passed ball that scored courtesy runner
Levi McCamish.
Eric Pepper scored an unearned run for the Patriots in the top of the third and Cumberlands added two more in the fifth on a two-run single by Daniel Lokesak.
Tiger starter
Jacob Cook exited the game after the fifth with a 5-3 lead and went on to record the win for the Tigers. He allowed three runs, two earned, off eight hits and struck out five. The CU bullpen allowed only one hit in the next three innings.
Lapchak, who was hit by a pitch three times in the games, helped manufacture a run for the Tigers in the fifth. He was hit for his second time to start the inning and moved to third on a wild pickoff move by Cumberlands' starter Matt Adams. Kopacz used a sac fly to score him. Garza scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. He also scored the fourth run in the sixth on a RBI double from Durham after Kopacz's home run.
CU pushed across two runs in the eighth to end the game.
Ryan Squires reached on an error at second to start the inning and scored on a bases loaded walk by
Keaton Neeb.
Trent Seamons singled to left to score
Gibby Briones for the game-ending hit, his second in his last three MSC games.
Campbellsville (29-14, 10-6 MSC) will host Cumberlands (21-22, 6-10 MSC) for a conference doubleheader Saturday at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
