Tigers avenge loss to Cumberland University, 9-2

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Rusty Devitt seemed in full control on the mound Tuesday evening with support from his offense and defense en route to a 9-2 victory for Campbellsville University over perennial power Cumberland University at Tiger Field.

Devitt, who was making his sixth career appearance against the visiting Bulldogs, allowed two earned runs and four hits through seven innings of work. He did not allow a walk and struck out five. The two runs were given up on solo home runs in the fourth and seventh by Sam Lind and Nick Sydnor, respectively.

Campbellsville jumped on the board with a four-spot in the third inning. After Trent Seamons reached on an error, Tanner Nielsen delivered the Tigers' first single of the game. Danny Lapchak drove in the first run of the day with a squeeze bunt that allowed Seamons to dive in safely at home on an error for the first run of the game. Gibby Briones added a two-RBI single in the inning and later scored the fourth-run on a Michael Durham double.

In the fifth inning, Lapchak, who was 2-for-4 in the game with three runs scored, led things off with a double and scored on a sac fly by Briones. Lapchak doubled again in the sixth to drive in Seamons, reached base earlier in the inning on an RBI single.

The Tigers added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eight on a triple to center by Chance Kopacz.

Devitt improved to 3-0 on the season and maintains an impressive 0.60 ERA after giving up his first runs of the season through 30 innings pitched. Andrew Shoemaker pitched the eighth and ninth innings of relief without allowing a base runner. He struck out two of his six batters faced.

Cody Ferrell recorded the loss after allowing four runs off three hits and two walks through four innings. Logan Neal, Mitch Rainer and Craig Monson each pitched out of the bullpen. The Bulldogs' staff failed to strike out a Tiger hitter in the game.

The Tigers received 10 of their 11 hits from their top five hits with Nielsen, Lapchak, Kopacz, Briones and Durham each having two hits on the night. Seamons was the only other player to collect a hit for the home team.

The win avenges a March 20 loss at Cumberland University in which the Tigers led 8-2 entering the bottom of the ninth before giving up seven unearned runs to fall, 9-8, to the Bulldogs. That loss started a small speed bump for Campbellsville's season, but the Tigers have won seven of their last nine in the past two weeks.

Campbellsville (32-13, 12-6 MSC) was scheduled to play Asbury University on Wednesday, April 18 for Senior Day, but the game has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict. CU will play its Senior Day early next week at a time to be determined. The Tigers will travel to the University of Rio Grande this weekend for its final Mid-South Conference regular season series.
