RIO GRANDE, Ohio --
Jacob Cook was in full control on the mound Saturday for Campbellsville University, as the Tigers pounded out a 14-0 win at the University of Rio Grande in a complete-game, one-hit performance by the senior pitcher from Vallejo, Calif.Â
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Cook and Rio starter Eric Ford. Ford pitched a no-hitter through the first three innings, but that changed in the fourth. Campbellsville didn't only break up the no-hit bid, the Tigers blasted 12 runs in a 17 at-bat inning. After that, Cook settled into a zone to retire 12 of the next 13 RedStorm batters. He hit one batter in the fourth and struck out the side in the fifth and sixth, retiring seven of his last nine batters on strikes.
Cook finishes the regular season with the team lead in strike outs with 63 through 69 innings pitched.
Danny Lapchak started CU's 39-minute fourth inning by reaching base after being hit by a pitch.
Chance Kopacz,
Rylan Chin and
Michael Durham each followed singles with Chin's scoring the first two runs of the game.
Craig Edwards then drew the first of three-straight walks for the Tigers.
Trent Seamons and
Tanner Nielsen collected RBI singles to bat around the order for the TIgers without Rio recording an out. Lapchak returned to the plate and drew a walk before Kopacz struck out for CU's first out in the inning. Durham, Edwards and
Brandon Johnson added a trio of two-out hits before Rio was able to escape the inning.
The RedStorm used four pitchers in the inning, allowing all 12 earned runs off eight hits and five walks. Chin and Johnson each drove in three runs in the inning.
CU added a run in the fifth with an RBI ground out by Kopacz and in the seventh from an RBI single by Durham, who led CU with a 4-for-5 day.
Kyle Findley had Rio's only hit in the second inning.
The loss drops Rio Grande (27-24, 6-14 MSC) into the play-in game for the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Rio will face the University of Pikeville at 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 25 at CU's Tiger Field to start the MSC Tournament action.
