CU falls to Georgetown, 9-3, in Day One night cap

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -Two three-run innings proved to be the difference Thursday evening as third-seed Campbellsville University dropped the Mid-South Conference first day nightcap at Tiger Field, 9-3, to Georgetown College.

Georgetown, which won a coin toss to be the home team in the game, became the ninth-straight home team to record a victory in the tournament in as many games.

Campbellsville (36-15) drops to the loser's bracket, where it will meet top-seed Lindsey Wilson College in an elimination game at 10 a.m. EDT Friday. Georgetown (43-9) advances to the winner's bracket semifinal against fifth-seed Shawnee State University at 4 p.m. EDT.

The game began as an All-Conference pitcher's duel between CU's Jacob Cook and the MSC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, Tyler Arthur. Both loaded the bases in the third, but while Arthur caught a break with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Cook did not have the same result in the bottom half of the third.

Tanner Baldwin led off the inning with a double to left. Cooke hit TC O'Neal before Chris Wood (4-for-4) had a bunt single to load things up. A fly ball to right and quick relay from Chance Kopacz appeared to save a run until the ball sailed to the backstop, scoring Baldwin. With Georgetown on the board, Ryan Serrato added the first hint of insurance with a two-RBI single to center.

Georgetown's second three-run inning came in the fourth. Tanner Baldwin executed a squeeze bunt to take away a play at the plate or at first to drive in Mike Steinke, who led off the inning with a single. Steinke moved to second on a bunt and third on a David Higuera single. Randy Guite later collected a two-RBI hit with a high bounce at short to give the orange and black Tigers a 6-0 lead.

Michael Durham, who led CU with a 2-for-4 nightcap, doubled to right-center with one out in the sixth and scored the host team's first run of the game on an RBI single by Craig Edwards. Campbellsville went on to cut the lead in half, 6-3, in the seventh with an RBI double from Durham and a RBI single from Rylan Chin. However, Georgetown put the three runs back on the board with one in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Arthur improved to 10-0 on the year after 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs of eight hits and three walks. He struck out five. Chad Richie pitched the last three innings for Georgetown to record his 11th save of the season.

Cook dropped to 6-2 on the year, allowing two earned runs off seven hits through four innings on the hill.
