CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville used a Tuesday sweep of the University of Virginia at Wise to maintain a portion of the lead in the Mid-South Conference at Veterans Memorial Park. The Lady Tigers move to 27-13, 11-2.
It was the fourth sweep of an conference opponent this season.
Campbellsville 6, UVa.-Wise 2Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Campbellsville (26-13, 10-2) used an RBI-double by
Heather Oakley and a passed ball to take control of the first game of a doubleheader against the Lady Cavaliers.
UVa.-Wise (19-19, 5-7) had gone ahead 2-1 on an RBI-double by Charity Lawson and a single by Morgan Mayes.
Courtney Turpin, fresh off a Pitcher of the Week honor in the MSC, did not have her best stuff, giving up seven hits. But she stranded six Lady Cavaliers and benefited from two double plays by her teammates.
The Lady Tigers pounded out 15 hits, three (two singles and a triple) by
Kacie Vincent and two hits each by
Kristin Benton and Oakley. CU got RBI-singles from
Bailey Dillender and
Jennifer England.
Emma Napier and Turpin had doubles and
Brooke Boils,
Alyssa Barker both reached safely.
CU got an RBI-triple out of Benton in the first, knocking in Napier who had doubled. The Lady Tigers picked up a fourth run in the third on England's single and then scored two in the bottom of the sixth after Vincent led off with a triple. Boils had an RBI-bunt and Dillender's double scored Boils, who took second on an overthrow.
Campbellsville 9, UVa.-Wise 0The Lady Tigers sent 15 batters to the plate in the third inning and put the game away with nine runs.
The Lady Cavaliers' Chelsey Booth relinquished five hits and walked five before being pulled for Lannie Johnston, who allowed an RBI-single to
Kacie Vincent.
Taylor Wroe pitched three innings of four-hit softball before giving way to
Martina Riney. Riney allowed a single and walked one in two innings of work.
Of Campbellsville's seven hits only
Courtney Turpin's bases-clearing double was for extra bases. Vincent and
Emma Napier had two singles each and
Heather Oakley and
Kristin Benton reached base once each.
Campbellsville jumps out of conference tomorrow with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against West Virginia Tech at Veterans Memorial Park.
