RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Campbellsville could not overcome an error-filled first game and had to settle for a split at Rio Grande Friday afternoon, losing the first game 5-4 and winning the second 4-2.
The split puts the Lady Tigers in a loss-column tie for first place in the Mid-South Conference with Lindsey Wilson and Georgetown.
Rio Grande 5, Campbellsville 4Rio (14-13, 7-8) scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Katie Fuller. Maegen Pendleton walked to lead off the inning and a single by Jessi Robinson moved her to third where she scored on Fuller's safety.
Campbellsville out-hit Rio 8-6, but CU's five errors proved to much to overcome as four of the five Rio runs were unearned.
Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double by
Bailey Dillender and a run-scoring single from
Jennifer England. But the Lady Tigers could not stand prosperity, giving up two runs off three errors in the bottom of the second, two on one play.
Campbellsville (29-14, 11-3) picked up tying runs in the top of the fifth after Rio went ahead 4-2 in the bottom of third.
Jordan Cornett led off with a singe to left.
Kristin Benton got a two-out single and then Dillender plated her second run of the game with her second safety.
In the fourth, England tried to stretch a two-base error on the right fielder but was thrown out at third. The Lady Tigers stranded six runners in the game.
Vincent and England (RBI) had a two-hit game while Benton (RBI), Dillender (2RBIs) and
Heather Oakley all reached safely once.
Anna Smith (10-8) picked up the win.
Courtney Turpin (16-8) shouldered with the loss on a seven hitter.
Campbellsville 4, Rio Grande 2 Taylor Wroe (13-1) threw a four-hitter for Campbellsville as the Lady Tigers used five Red Storm errors to eek out a 4-2 win.
The Lady Tigers used an error and then a single by
Brooke Boils to put two on with one out in the top of the second. With two outs,
Kacie Vincent reached on an error by pitcher Anna Smith that scored
Heather Oakley. A single by
Emma Napier scored Boils and Vincent.
Rio (14-14, 7-9) drew within 3-2 in the fourth when Smith's single scored Katie Fuller and a ground out scored Smith.
CU (30-14, 12-3) picked up an insurance run in the sixth when
Sara Paragon's second single scored Oakley, who had reached on an error.
Rio stranded two runners in the sixth, but Wroe set the Red Storm down in order in the seventh.
Anna Smith, who got the win in the first game, suffered the loss in the second.
Smith allowed seven hits to the Lady Tigers. Napier (2 RBIs) and Paragon (RBI) had two hits. England, Oakley and Boils all had one hit.
Campbellsville will host Pikeville on Thursday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park.
