Carrlson hat trick leads CU offense in 7-1 win

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The men's soccer Tigers of Campbellsville University didn't waste any time unleashing their offense Saturday morning at Citizens Bank Field in Finley Stadium. Campbellsville improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-1 home opener win over Lawrence Tech University (Mich.).

Campbellsville scored in the first 30 seconds off an unassisted goal by sophomore, Gustav Carlsson. Carlsson utilized his speed into open field past a handful of LTU defenders, finding the net for the first CU goal of the game.

Just a few minutes later, CU found the net again. This time Carrlson was taken down in the box to set up a penalty kick goal off the foot of senior Keegan Prince. Campbellsville led 2-0.

The Tiger duo hooked up in the 18th minute, as Prince found Carlsson across the middle for what would be Carlsson's second goal of the afternoon and third in three days. That is until the 13th minute, when Carlsson sealed a hat trick with his third goal of the contest. This time, the goal was off the keen eye of sophomore defender, Andrew Tierranegra.

The lead quickly became 5-0 in the 35th minute when Roraigh Yearwood found Curtis Myers for his first career goal.

Although Lawrence Tech never netted an offensive goal, in the 37th minute, Campbellsville would be charged with an own-goal. CU freshman keeper, Max Malachiyev played the ball off of Tierranegra's leg, bouncing behind Malachiyev and into the LTU goal, Campbellsville 5-1 heading into intermission.

A number of Tiger reserves saw action during the second half, a total of 20 to be exact.

"To be honest, we are 20 deep," Tigers head coach, Adam Preston said. "I don't feel like we lose a step with whoever steps on the field. We've never had that here, and there are going to be good teams, even teams that are more talented than us, that can't play with us because we can put the extra guys on."

Of those twenty, second-half substitution, Trevor Jarvis scored his second career goal, in back-to-back games, in the 15th minute, assist to Carlsson, Campbellsville 6-1.

The Tiger's final goal of the afternoon came in the 85th minute off a Andrew Nugent assist. Drew Sin bent a ball around a crew of LTU defenders and Nugent flicked it with his head to Pontus Yngve in the box. Yngve one-touched it into the back of the net, Campbellsville 7-1.

"I felt we played really well," Preston said. "We're actually starting to connect and move the ball. That ball movement is really effective and is the reason we are finding the back of the net. When we work together, we're going to be a really good team. When we try to play as individuals and do it all on our own, then it turn out as good."

Although 20 Tigers saw action in Saturday's contest, Preston is anxious for what the future holds for his team.

"We have three more guys coming out next week that will be starters. So from one to 23, in a week, we're deadly. I think this is going to be a good year," Preston said.

Campbellsville (2-0) will travel to Kentucky Christian University on Monday for a 4 p.m. EDT game.
