CU beats University of Pikeville, 1-0

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The Campbellsville Lady Tiger soccer team unleashed a long-awaited but sloppy win Saturday against Mid-South Conference opponent, the University of Pikeville. Senior midfielder Cassie Yannelli scored the lone goal of the game with only four minutes left, defeating the Bears 1-0. Head Coach, Thom Jones, was satisfied with the win but thinks the team didn't play its best ball.

"The first half we were not ready to play," said Jones. "We started flat and did not play the caliber of soccer that we have been. After some adjustments at halftime, we came out and controlled the game but really struggled to score. We missed many opportunities but kept working hard and finally it paid off. So we'll take the 1-0 win and enjoy it."

Although 13 shots were fired between the teams during the first 45 minutes, none found the back of the net, leaving the score tied at nothing at the end of the half. CU left the locker room ready for battle, though, and unleashed 18 shots in the second half, as opposed to Pikeville's two.

It seemed that no Lady Tiger ball was going to get past goalkeeper Chelsea Shulte, but CU was persistent. After a hard passed ball from junior forward Jessica Ralph, Yannelli smoked one by Shulte with only four minutes remaining, ultimately giving Campbellsville the only goal needed for victory.

Junior Tiger goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman had five saves in the game for the shutout, while Shulte had nine.

Campbellsville (3-4-1, 1-1 MSC) will play its next game at home on Wednesday, Sept. 26, against MSC opponent Georgetown College. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
