Campbellsville ties up No. 2 Rio Grande, 1-1

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- In the third portion of Homecoming matchups for Campbellsville University on Saturday, Oct. 5, CU men's soccer walked away with a 1-1 draw against the University of Rio Grande, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA.

With the draw, Campbellsville's record turns to 10-1-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in Mid-South Conference play.

In a game that eventually rolled over into the early-morning hours Sunday, Rio Grande wasted no time finding the net in the contest, scoring in the fourth minute of regulation.

Sophomore Luiz Filho fired the ball into the back of the net for the first score of the contest; despite a diving effort from CU sophomore goalkeeper Max Malachiyev. The assist was credited to URG senior Orlando Zapata.

CU had opportunities to score in both the 34th and 39th minutes from the foot of sophomore Roraigh Yearwood, but both attempts missed wide, as Rio carried its 1-0 lead into halftime.

The score remained unchanged until the 57th minute of regulation, when CU sophomore Eurodger Bargblor Jr. played a ball into the Rio Grande goalkeeper who was not able to maintain possession, resulting in a loose ball controlled by Bargblor, who blazed past the fallen keeper towards an open net.

Bargblor tapped the ball into the back of the open net to even the score at one all. The goal gave CU a momentum swing large enough for the Tigers to maintain their comeback efforts, forcing overtime at the end of the remaining 37 minutes of regulation.

Campbellsville had several opportunities late and in overtime, but were unable to settle a solid shot. Bargblor had another shot in a close call with the keeper that managed to stay out of the net, and then senior captain John Kennedy headed a free kick from just inside midfield, but the ball was punched out of bounds by the Rio Grande goalkeeper.

Malachiyev finished the game with eight total saves. CU finished the evening with a total of 18 shots, seven of which were on target.

"You have this dichotomy; you get real excited about playing the number two team in the nation and tying them," Head Coach Adam Preston said of his team's performance. "But I think we're better. I honestly believe we're better. We had them on the ropes for the 45 minutes of the second half. In overtime they were struggling, and we had the better chances. They are a fantastic team, and I don't want to take anything away from them, but tonight we were better.

"We would love to see them again. We've got a read on how they are playing. At halftime we were able to go in, because they ran us in the first half; we were lucky not to take more goals. But in the second half, we had a read on what they were doing, and we went at them hard, and they struggled to keep us out of the goal. We had tons of good chances, and I think on any other night we score two or three, and win this game handedly. But tonight, we tied. We aren't satisfied with that. We are going to get better and keep pushing forward."

Campbellsville will return to Finley Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 12 when it hosts the University of Pikeville in a women's-men's doubleheader at 6 and 8 p.m. EDT. The Tigers will play the second game of the double header.
